The Portland Generating Station in Northampton, Pa., is shown on Aug. 8, 2011. Owned by GenOn Energy, the 60 year-old coal-fired power plant on the Delaware River directly across from New Jersey is making residents of both Pennsylvania and New Jersey sick. In Pennsylvania, its toxic coal ash sits in improperly lined and under-monitored pits, placing the community at risk for mercury, arsenic and lead poisoning.
On February 29, 2012, GenOn announced it would be closing the Portland Generating Station and seven other coal-fired power stations throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio. The stations will be phased out starting in June of 2012 and complete deactivation by 2015.

The Rankine Generating Station is a former hydro-electric generating station along the Canadian side of the Niagara River in Niagara Falls, Ontario, slightly downstream from the older Toronto Power Generating Station. It was built in for the Canadian Niagara Power Company and named for company's founder William Birch Rankine (b. 1858), a New York City (and later of Niagara Falls) lawyer originally from Geneva, New York who died three days after (in Grafton, New Hampshire) the station opened in 1905 and renamed in 1927.[1] Acquired by Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation in 1950 and in 2002,[2] the station became a wholly owned subsidiary of FortisOntario (and part of Canadian owned Fortis Inc.).[3] It was decommissioned in 2006.
It's famous tunnel which emptied at the bottom of the falls opened last year as an attraction. Who would have thought that something like would be a made for the public, never mind enjoyed by them? You had sneak into it by walking along the shore on a long walk before....unless you were brave/crazy enough to go down into the tunnel with rope gear. Now you can take an elevator. It's mind blowing what can happen in 17 years...my visits here feel like they were yesterday.

The NIPSCO Michigan City Generating Station photographed from the draw bridge over Trail Creek. Longbowsnyper and I toured the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore from Michigan City to Portage, IN on our fixed gear bikes. We each had totally manual 35mm cameras with 50 mm lenses and no light meters. The combination of fixed gear bikes and manual film cameras made for a fine Vintage day.
Photographed on Kodak Tri-X 400 film using a Nikon F with a Yellow Wratten 8 filter and polarizer on a Nikkor 50mm f/2 lens. Exposure was by Sunny 16 -2 stops to account for the filters. The camera was at f/5.6 for this shot for better depth of field control.
