Machines of war fall into formation behind the high command of BNSF orange, spearheading eastbound military special U FTLPAD1 15M across the causeway at Cold Springs Landing near Lynxville, WI. The tall bluffs that line the Upper Mississippi River Valley loom large at the train's back as it moves down a rather scenic stretch of the railroad's Aurora Subdivision on a crystal clear spring morning. This 5800 foot cross-country convoy of military equipment is operating between the Army bases at Fort Lewis, WA, near Tacoma, and Fort Knox, KY, via the P&L at Paducah. With lines in, a couple of local fisherman try their luck in the calm waters below hoping for a bite, completely oblivious to both our presence and the passing train behind them.
Metra Union Pacific West Line Train 38, bound for Chicago, kicks up the dust as it sails past an idling freight train at Mile Post 25.50 of the UPRR Geneva Subdivision in wintry Wheaton.

After leaving Roseville in the early evening, this rather short eastbound approaches Donner Summit as it travels through Norden. Trailing behind the freshly painted AC44 is a brand new set of Siemens products for Via Rail. Siemens assembles the chargers, venture coaches, and other rail products in Sacramento less than 100 miles away. After leaving Sacramento, the Union Pacific will take it halfway across the country before handing the set off to another railroad to take it the rest of the way to Canada.
On a railway full of newer model GE ET and ES44's, it's refreshing to catch a pair of older units still earning their keep. One of the few remaining cowl body Dash 8's teams up with a Dash 9 to haul X310 east at Entwistle Alberta.
Arizona Eastern's Lordsburg to Miami freight crosses a wooden trestle south of Peridot in the last light of one of the longest days in the year. Despite spending nearly 30 minutes switching an industry in Thatcher and passing Pima several minutes later than on the 27th (www.flickr.com/americandiesels/50054630558), the train somehow made it to this spot nearly an hour earlier. This Mon-Wed-Fri job generally departs Lordsburg between 0900 and 1100L, runs trackage rights on UP to Bowie where they turn north and recrew at Safford, then on to Miami, AZ.
BNSF 6150 leads a northbound coal empty through the Greenland Open Space in Greenland, CO while a snow-covered Pikes Peak rises to the sky some 25 miles away.
This is my first train photo taken with my actual camera gear in almost 11 months. Why the delay? Life stuff, interest in other things, and a general apathy for the hobby anymore to be quite honest. I thought it might be a phase I was going through with not getting out trackside, but as more and more time passed, I realized I just didn't care.
With that being said, I did enjoy this particular morning and had myself a nice little chase of a train with much better power than this ubiquitous GEVO!
Loaded coal train C765 heads south on CN's Chetwynd Sub at Tacheeda British Columbia. The coal traffic comes form a loadout nears Falls, and is a welcome addition to traffic on the former BC Rail line.

BNSF 717 is on the point of a southbound manifest in The Sag in Spruce, CO.
Looks can be deceiving; this train is not moving. And it hasn't moved in hours and it won't move in hours. On this particular day, the was a MoW window that ran from 0830L until ~1730L, thus providing a wide-boot'd kick to the nuggets of the railfan community.
CN's Grande Cache Subdivision crosses the Wapiti River south of Grande Prairie Alberta on a large steel trestle.
Getting close enough to the trestle to photograph proved to be more difficult than expected.
Route A was shelved due to the lack of ownership of a lifted "Rig Rocket" pickup truck. Route B was selected, however the latter did not get us as close to the bridge as initially intended. An almost 2 km flight of the chicken was required to produce the shot you see here, of train A458 heading northbound. he first thing that came to mind when I laid eyes on the bridge was "Damn that's big!" and getting the bird into position in time to frame the train on the massive structure proved to be yet another challenge.

The Pine Pass in North Eastern British Columbia is a relatively obscure pass through the Rocky Mountains. While Canadian Pacific gained fame with their crossing to the south, Pacific Great Eastern's grade gained little attention outside of the province when constructed.
To this day very few railfans venture to this are of the country, now under the helm of Canadian National and operated as the Chetwynd Subdivision. One of the more iconic locations is the southern portal of the Azouzetta Tunnel at mile 597.9
On this September morning we witness southbound loaded coal train C765 assault the pass with 2 of General Electric's newest locomotive models in Run 8. Five sets later and the Chetwynd Sub became a new favorite line to photograph
Ferrosur AC44CW No. 4414 is leading a loaded auto train from Aguascalientes, Ags. towards the port of Veracruz, where the vehicles will be loaded onto ships for export. The train is coming out of tunnel 23, at SC-292+480 between the sidings of Acultzingo and Mezquite, and is about to enter a 270-degree left-hand curve that will take it to the track seen middle right. Export autos are a significant chunk of Ferrosur's traffic with several pairs of autorack trains running daily.
BNSF 714 and 775 continue leading a repo intermodal train down the Joint Line passing Greenland, Colorado.
CN 327 with CSXT 3194 in the lead (with its white and blue nose) is being passed by a blue and white Nissan as both cross the Beauharnois canal on the Larocque Bridge.

Recently, Amtrak's new Phase IV heritage unit had been released and made its first runs on the California Zephyr. Everything was fine on the first trip, but the second one ended in disaster. While on the Provo Sub,164 would start suffering traction motor problems which eventually led to the unit not being able to load. The trailing unit, 54, had already been suffering from loading issues due to a broken radiator. With the train now stranded in Utah, UP 7719 came to rescue the train hours later. Since there was only one fully working unit they were forced to add another locomotive at Sparks. The original plan was to add UP 5537, but this did not happen and the 6376 was added. Now departing Sparks over seven hours late, the former SP made its way west over the famous Donner Pass in the evening as it made its appearance at Yuba Pass in perfect golden light. With a friendly crew on board, this was about to be a short but fun chase in the last moments of light.
N O T F O R C R O | On its second day of revenue service in its new British Columbia Railway paint, CN 3115 is at the helm of daily Toronto-Halifax box train 120. It is seen passing the former connection with MMA/CMQ/CP's Saint-Guillaume subdivision, which has not been used since at least 2015. Consist : CN 3115, CN 3274, CN 3818.
The day after the Moffat shut down on account of too much snow and trains running into mechanical issues, the MGJNY 15, with the Continental Divide behind, drops downgrade into Crescent. With too much snow clogging the mainline (just to the left of the train), trains here are running through the siding.
My Athearn Genesis BNSF ES44DC No. 7652 in HO Scale sits under the sun as the real version of it leads the H-SLADEN running northbound across the Palmer Divide.

The West Virginia shadows start to cast over the Irish Cemetery near Rodemer, West Virginia as 6 AC traction GE’s muscle a 115 car “drag” for Newport News up Cranberry Grade.
UP 7514 leads an eastbound manifest through Applegate. This scene is interesting as the train comes out of a tunnel just to go through another tunnel that isn't even a tunnel.
BNSF's first RoadRailer train between the Northwest and Southern California nears Klamath Falls, Oregon at Union Pacific’s Wocus siding. It is using trackage rights originally granted to predecessor Great Northern.
The train was started in 1996 by Southern Pacific. After Union Pacific acquired SP later that year, it continued to operate the RoadRailer until BNSF took over in August 2001. After three years of operation by BNSF, this RoadRailer service ended in August 2004.
The northbound Coast Starlight nears the Oregon border, after spending the last 21 hours traversing the state of California. The next stop for train 14 will be a crew change at Klamath Falls, in around 25 minutes.

Frigid winter air measures in the single digits and the fallen snow that covers the wilderness floor nearly doubles and triples that number in inches. Distant chugs bounce off the rocky hills, echoing through forests of pine trees and filing the otherwise dead, quiet air with a refreshing sign of life. Traits such as these are how one could describe winter operations on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railway in Michigan's northern Upper Peninsula. An ore carrier with a storied history that dates back to 1896, the LS&I of today still remains a scene of those days gone by, shuttling around rolling stock dating back to pre-World War II while operating some of the last General Electric U30C and C30-7 locomotives in the country. A far cry from the over 100 miles of track this joint used to operate over, the current 20 mile section stretching between the city of Marquette and the Cleveland-Cliffs Tilden Mine near Ishpeming is all this railroad needs to keep trains operating around the clock shuttling jennies full of steaming iron ore to anxiously awaiting freighters docked along the shore of Lake Superior.
Today's "7-Tilden" job, piloted by the railroad's only pair of ex-BN U30C "U-Boats," bends through the rugged hillside as they drag 60 fresh loads out of the mine for the docks at Marquette, passing the searchlight distant signal for the begin CTC with Canadian National at Eagle Mills Junction just around the corner.
Against all the odds, reaching their late 40s into year 2022, the clock is ticking on these old, worn-out, cascade green and white workhorses and one could maybe mistake the sound of their chugging 7FDL-16 motors for the beautiful song of a swan crying out just before its death. Newer AC traction wide-cab locomotives have dwindled the fleet of the "Universals" down to just these last two and word on the street is that this could be their last winter turning a wheel in revenue service for LS&I.
