Today, the average user is obliged to stay on top of the technological curve, thrust into a vortex of consumer myths, riding waves of both euphoria and disappointment. This has prompted artists and theorists alike to break these assured flows of media, for instance by zooming into the otherwise transparent Human Computer Interface and turning its limiting, characteristic blueprints into a revolting yet delightful spectacle. On other occasions, artists bend particular devices, or even create completely new technologies. Through these subversive tactics artists show the governing filters of not only noise, but also “unwanted functionalities”, and how limiting these shiny black-boxed commodities have become. This panel will pay special attention to nostalgic problems, subversive tactics (like glitch) and media archeology as an artistic practice.

Il laboratorio 'Salviamo Gli Animali' nasce con il proposito di approfondire con bambini e ragazzi in età scolare il rapporto uomo-animale, e le conoscenze relative a questo argomento.
L'idea di progettare degli incontri di sensibilizzazione sulle caratteristiche sociali, emotive ed etologiche degli animali – uomo compreso – vuole, con semplicità e immediatezza, attraverso giochi, disegni e momenti di dibattito, guidare alla conoscenza più approfondita e alla riflessione sul rispetto dell'altro.
Il ciclo di incontri si è svolto da gennaio a febbraio nella scuola media “Garibaldi” di Genzano, includendo sette classi prime.
Con ogni sezione sono stati strutturati due incontri della durata di due ore ciascuno, durante i quali i bambini hanno potuto cimentarsi in attività e dibattiti su questioni legate alla conoscenza reciproca e dell'empatia.

Economics; the art of making money?
is his performantive lecture with which he introduced himself at tm2k12.
“Making money” denotes different things; primarily to earn money, but also printing or counterfeiting money, organizing local exchange trading systems, even designing alternative currency. The multivalence of the phrase delineates the space that my research has occupied. The space of representation, of circulation and dissemination, where power employs art(ists) and images to communicate its authority and to construct economic value, masking the self referentiality of money. In my presentation I will describe this space and suggest different strategies on how its possible to challenge economic value, from different plateaux; from psychoanalysis, from history, from linguistics, from philosophy, from the arts, and from economics itself.
The Vilém Flusser Residency programme aims to support conceptual projects and works that are towards a form of practice. The programme seeks to encourage new research approaches and further develop existing projects.
Greek philosopher and economist Georgios Papadoloulos has been selected as the first resident. In his research project Iconographies of Drachma; Speculations on Symbolic Value he addresses the economic reality of Greece and how it manifests itself in the currency Drachma.

With such an array of histories whirling through the media sphere over the past decades, it seems important to tackle some questions about how these methodologies have and are inflecting an equally wide range of artistic practices that incorporate, re-evaluate, rethink, spoof, or re-invent technologies under rubrics ranging from “archaeology” to “variantology”. This “Open Conversation” brings together a range of participants whose work traverses historiographic and contemporary curatorial practices that resonate with assessments and contributions to this debate. In a sphere with such varied approaches to artistic production – geneaologies, archaeologies, and other approaches to revive, extend, reconsider, etc., previous techniques or media – this “conversation” will attempt to bridge differences, clarify methodologies, and, most importantly, ask what is the relevance of all this historiography in the working spheres where art is being made.

Riots in Great Britain, uprisings in Greece, crisis in Japan – what do these social eruptions have in common? The world system is in turmoil – a process that not only disrupts the fragile order of the global South but more and more aggressively also those walled gardens composing the industrialised world. Suddenly we are talking about failed states located inside exclusive clubs such as the G8 and the Euro-17. Before we are able to understand the implications of this far-reaching transformation, we notice new authoritarian trends in politics foreclosing democratic processes.
In this time of social crisis we have to ask about the potential of social media. After all it is a strong collaborative grassroots quality that qualifies them as platforms for social change. With respect to the walled gardens in crisis, this panel wonders: What are seminal practices and applications of social media? What is their disruptive potential in increasingly authoritarian media landscapes?
