Back on 7/21/1979 this scene at Youngstown, Ohio of a local switcher was an ever day occurrence, but that was 40 years ago. Today they still do the same thing but with GP-38th-40th-Gen Sets or what have you. But I will still take the early GP-7-9 any day.

This snap is taken in the evening almost dark , No Lampost around . Location Pure village . Some people had a gen set and the swithed on their light , The light looked beautiful to me . So sharing with you.

Union Pacific B23-7 No. 183 awaits assignment at North Yard in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 23, 1989. The unit was built Missouri Pacific 4683 by GE in May 1981. By Dec. 2006, it was converted to a Railpower RP20GE Gen-Set unit, and numbered UPY 2610.

This was one of the few days I actually got out taking photos of the Alaska Railroad in 2013. After being terminated as Superintendent earlier in the year I was pretty demoralized with the company and railroading in general so I pulled away from trains for a bit. Sadly this was a lost opportunity because time marched on as I chose to forgo countless opportunities for stunning photography that I have no come to regret. But at least for some reason I chose to go out to see this.

In 2013 the Alaska Railroad supported the building of the Matanuska Electric Association’s new Eklutna Generating Station, a 171-megawatt natural gas powered utility plant, powered by ten 18-cylinder Wartsila engines. The engines were each shipped from Europe by vessel to the Port of Anchorage where they were loaded on to rail for the 25 mile trip to Eklutna where they were offloaded on the stub track and transported the last mile to the site of the new plant being built. The Alaska Railroad leased a 20 axle depressed center flat car from Kasgro Inc.’s Specialized Rail Transport for the move. Floated up empty on the barge, the car was used to cycle back and forth 10 times with each of the 330 ton gen set units.

Here is one such move behind GP38-2 2002 headed north seen paused out of the way in Birchwood Yard waiting for a southbound gravel train and northbound cruise train to pass before they can head out on the main for last half dozen miles to the unloading site.

As we'd specifically gone to the Cuyahoga Scenic for all things Alco, I can't say any of us were impressed that this thing was floating around! I believe it departed the line shortly afterwards to be replaced by an even less interesting gen-set unit.

The first Gen-Set switcher that was built on the frame of an SP SW1500 was only 2 power sets, so it was shorter than the subsequent locos. Used primarily in southern California during its career, it was not well received and stored for the past several years. In mid October 2017 it was dead in tow on an eastbound Union Pacific stack train across northern Illinois, bound for a surplus equipment auction in St. Louis. Captured at Nelson, IL.

This is the small part of another small Island i visited while i was in Semporna (refer to my previous post to know which part of Borneo it is) its called Maiga Island. We stay there for one night in one of the local house in Maiga, it has a very basic accommodation, no proper toilet, no clean water and the only electricity is from the gen set, it feel like living like those people in the stilt house i think :) The stilt houses in this pictures are owned by the Sea Gypsies, i put pictures of them in the comment box but i will post more about them later on. Sea Gypsies is an indigenous ethnic group of Maritime Southeast Asia.

Running more or less concurrently with the GB Railfreight/Brush Class 73/9 re-engineering programme was another project to rebuild the electro-diesels into a virtually new locomotive. Developed by Derby-based Railway Vehicle Engineering Ltd (RVEL) with funding coming from Network Rail, this scheme was first announced in the summer of 2011 with the resultant locos intended for use on the latter’s test trains.

The key element of the extensive rebuild was the installation of two 750hp Cummins QSK19 engines, the same type as found in several modern DMU classes, including the ‘Voyager’ family. In this case though, each engine would be mounted vertically in a raft instead of horizontally to give ease of removal. Each was coupled to an alternator to create a ‘gen set’ with the assemblies being supplied by the National Railway Equipment Corporation, the American company specialising in such technology.

Other alterations included the fitting of new electronic control equipment, cooling systems and brakes while the cab desks were completely redesigned. A computer management system was installed to balance out the use of the two engines with the loco capable of operating on just one ‘gen set’ until the power demand requires the second to start and assist. Like the Brush conversions, the proven English Electric traction motors were retained
