On the whole, most of the historical diesel powered sites through the UK are now Gen Sets and Pumping Stations, so this was a really interesting one to come across. The engine room is fitted out with a pair of lovely National engines, the one in the background is the big engine that runs the machines in the peat works off a series of belts, and in the foreground is a small National gen set providing the power for the lighting running a BTH generator. Really sad to see this site in such a bad way, it looks like earlier attempts of preservation have sadly failed.
The Peat Processing Works was built in 1938 by the Midland Moss Litter Company to replace an earlier works that was destroyed in a fire. The company found great success early on, processing 3000 tons of peat in 1954, however the company went into liquidation in 1962 coinciding with the closure of the railways, and works ceased entirely in the early 1970s. The remains of the works are grade II* listed and are an exceptionally rare survival of this kind.
