Raw translucent Agate from a River in Northern NSW.
Found while snorkeling for gems amoungst some larger rocks.
Agate is Translucent to Semi-tranclusent Chalcedony - The generic group name used for minerals composed of microcrystaline quartz
( Quartz being minerals composed of Silicon + Oxygen (SiO2)
Micro-crystalline describes the miniscule crystalline structure of the material - observable only through a microscope )
This piece, like many other agates formed in a volcanic area, where waters rich in silica would flow through the igneous rock (often full of cavities and fractures).
As the levels of silica rise in these waters, the solution begins to form a gel like substance. Layers of this gel will build up
in cracks or inside cavities, forming strange and wonderful shapes, and producing the banding that is so common to agates.
This process of mineral movement often introduces impurities to the mix, resulting in many gorgeous variations ( Plume , Mossy or Dendritic agates to name a few ! )
We stuck the bucket in the fireplace to simulate the mine. The girls had to reach behind the black curtain and grab out a handful of stones. They sorted out the "slag" and chose a stone or bead for their pet's collar. When they found one they liked, they brought them to me and I twisted them into pendants for their pet's collar.

These are examples of what we did with the gems the girls "mined." The beads are super easy to do quickly, but I pre-twisted some wire so I could quickly set the larger stones. We strung these onto the collars we made for the pets. If you have never twisted wire before for jewelry, I'd recommend doing just the beads. The stones were a little tricky, and the finished result not too professional. Still, the girls were thrilled! The kids liked actually using what they had "mined."
The kids had fun visiting the Barking Mad Mine. We took "slag" rocks and mixed in nice stones and beads in a big bucket in the fireplace. The kids then took turns "mining" for "gems." They scooped out handfuls without looking and sifted through to find a gem, then I twisted wire around each and we attached them as pendants to each pet's collar.
