... outside the window ...

This fellow showed up this morning to check out the mushrooms. He is very shy, and I only got a quick snap. If you look at his tail, you can see that he has not finished molting.

Also known as Large Forest Gecko

Location: Lowland of western Peninsular Malaysia.

Spotted Kurt Orion, bumped into Kurt while out herping.

Call: Some sort like a soft bark www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RKn_nJJ4pY

According to Grismer et al (2022),

-Gekko smithii sensu stricto is restricted to southern Thailand south of the Isthmus of Kra and Peninsular Malaysia west of the Banjaran (mountain range) Titiwangsa, being that the type locality is on Penang Island, Penang.

-Gekko hulk sp. nov. is a new species from extreme southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia east of the Banjaran Titiwangsa and five east coast islands—the type locality being Pulau (island) Tioman, Pahang.

-Gekko cf. albofasciolatus is tentatively used to include Bornean populations west of the Iran Mountains in Sabah and Sarawak which, in the absence of molecular data, cannot unequivocally be separated morphologically from G. albofasciolatus from the type locality at Banjarmasin, Kalimantan, Indonesia east of the Iran Mountains (Source: Grismer LL, del Pinto L, Quah ESH, Anuar S, Cota M, McGuire JA, Iskandar DT, Wood PL Jr, Grismer JL 2022.)

We have several of these large gecko outside our house. They keep the bugs down efficiently. They can grow up to 300mm (12inch) in Philippines... ours are a bit smaller than that. And yes they are very vocal if you disturb them and they have a strong bite.

Two male tokays in a tamarind tree.

Wikipedia: The tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) is a nocturnal arboreal gecko in the genus Gekko, the true geckos. It is native to Asia and some Pacific Islands. This species is found in northeast India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh; throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia; and toward western New Guinea. Its native habitat is rainforest, where it lives on trees and cliffs, and it frequently adapts to rural human habitations, roaming walls and ceilings at night in search of insect prey. This is an introduced species in some areas outside its native range. It is established in Florida in the United States, Martinique, the islands of Belize, and possibly Hawaii. Increasing urbanization is reducing its range.

The male's mating call, a loud croak, is variously described as sounding like token, gekk-gekk, tuck-too, túc-key, tou-kay or tokay. The tokay gecko's call is also responsible for the name given to it by Filipino residents: "Tuko," and by U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War, the "Fuck-you lizard".

Sound files for how it obtained it's name by the G.I.'s can be found in the link below.

Er läuft die Glasscheibe hoch.

One morning I found this little gekko, young and severely exhausted, trapped between the surface of the water and the edge of the pool. He must have fallen into the water during the night and couldn't get out on his own. I then held out my arm to him, delicately, and he seized this chance to survive. I was able to observe it for a long time slowly making its way up my arm. I then approached him to a safe place where he could regain his strength and continue his life in complete freedom.

Despite the location and his young age, this specimen looks like a Tarentola gomerensis, or maybe Phyllodactylus angustidigitus.

G. albomaculatus is resurrected

to include mainland Sumatran, Nias Island, and Banyak Islands populations which, based on their morphology, cannot be separated from descriptions of G. albomaculatus from the type locality of Bangka Island, 15 km off the southeast coast of mainland Sumatra.

I saw a huge lizard-like creature crossing the trail but was unsure what species. One of my friends was brave enough to catch this beautiful gecko bare-hand. Like Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko), this species does bite hard. We took a few photos and let it go its merry way.

Etymology:

The specific name, smithii, is in honor of Scottish zoologist Andrew Smith (1797–1872), who was the founder of the South African Museum.

Length: About 14-14.5 inches

This is the second-largest gecko species in Malaysia. This gecko species has a few types of unique calls.

You hear them before you see them... They show-off a nocturne cacophonous chorus of “TÓóóck-Âây... calls, in an awesome volume The call is often mistaken for that of creaking trills of frog’s chorus. Big and colourful, the Tokay is one of the most striking geckos I have ever seen in my life. This fellow was relatively large, approximate 30 cm or more... Despite being aggressive and having a fierce and poisonous (nasty bacteria) bite I couldn’t resist taking my chances, of course I was wearing long sleeves shirt, thick gloves, protection glasses for my eyes and hat.

I hope y'all have a great week!
