Victorian era greenhouse in the walled garden of Holkham Hall, Norfolk.

Multiple spur gears and racks slide windows up and down to control ventilation. Inside all that there are iron frames ready to support shades. Victorian engineering made, as a matter of course, to work without complaint for decades. The greenhouse was actually allowed to decay but is now restored to former beauty.

The quirky rendering attempts to highlight the engineering and the glorious repeating geometry.

Macro Monday

i didn't have time to do any nature photography with my new helios lens, so my son's bmx and tool box had to suffice for now.... :)

Gears to open the gates releasing water from Lake Conway

Flowing with a passion after days of heavy rain. Quite often choked with debris, it seems to have had a clean out of late. Very happy to have some weather sealed gear for this - we got wet and then some. Thanks Michael for being willing to get a soaking for a shot.

Contraption for Macro Monday - gears on a bike...its crazy to see all the tiny things stuck in the gears.

I like these things. Brilliant little device that can be used in so many ways. Most might know this as a hose clamp.

West Ocean City Harbor, Atlantic Ocean Inlet, Maryland

This female Ptarmigan is all geared up for Summer but will have to wait for a few more days as some late seasonal snowfall thwarts her plans !

Detail of an old demonstration-style hand-cranked electrical generator

The smaller gear has a diameter of about a half-inch (1cm)

The larger gear has a diameter of about two inches (4cm)

When the operator (via the hand crank) turns the larger gear one revolution, the coil of wire (connected via an axle to the smaller gear) spins four revolutions, and the faster the coil spins, the more voltage is produced by the generator.

p.s. sono cordini di nasse accatastate verticalmente nel barcone di un pescatore...la striscia azzurra è il bordo della barca (scatto fortemente sottoesposto per far risaltare solo i cordini rispetto alle nasse di color scuro)
