Despite his youth, the symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-91), who was born and is buried in Charleville-Mézières, north-east France, was one of the most influential writers of his generation – so much so that Victor Hugo described him as “l’enfant Shakespeare”. Yet he was dissolute, self-centred, restless and a Libertine, utterly scornful of authority (“Morality” he once said, “is the weakness of the brain”). His catastrophic sexual liaison with the older Paul Verlaine is well documented – a relationship that was violent, destructive and tumultuous, not least for Verlaine’s wife and baby son.
Rimbaud wrote his ground-breaking poetry when he was a teenager, and by the age of 21 he had abandoned writing completely (although he was a prolific letter writer throughout his life). He then travelled extensively, often nomadically on foot, reaching faraway places such as Cyprus, Yemen and Aden.
He contracted cancer along the way, and died at the age of 37 after a leg amputation. The irony of his burial place is that he loathed Charleville, even as a child, and swore that he would never return.
Among the writers who claimed to be influenced by the young Rimbaud were Dylan Thomas, TS Eliot, JD Salinger, Vladimir Nabokov, Jack Kerouac – together with any number of French poets.
