The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família; English: Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family), is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona, Spain, designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926). Although incomplete, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated and proclaimed it a minor basilica, as distinct from a cathedral which must be the seat of a bishop. Construction of Sagrada Família had commenced in 1882, Gaudí became involved in 1883, taking over the project and transforming it with his architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms.
For travellers visiting Barcelona who like modernist architecture www.gaytraveladvice.com recommends: Sagrada Familia by Gaudi
I had lived for 8 years in Barcelona, and yet I had never visited the Sagrada Familia. That made me realize how little we get to know sometimes the cities we live in...
So this time, in my two and a half wonderful days visiting the city, I decided to take a look and get immersed in the history of this iconic monument.
Even with the crazy construction (there are scaffolds and cranes all over the place and most of the temple is shut down to public access) it was way worth the 12 euros and 50 cents for the access plus the lift to one of the towers by elevator, going down narrow stairs, not suited for claustrophobics or vertigo sufferers. LOL.
