At home, when it was dry some parts fell off the paper - So I tried to restore it. The new additions on the left page did work well but the test on the right page did not work and fell off, when it was dry. So this time I put a little bit of texture paste on the paper. This worked. Everything is still on the page.

Kabarettnummer über das Ja!-Natürlich-Schweinderl (etliche Werbespots sind auf joutube zu finden - einfach nach "ja natürlich schweinderl" suchen)

Wie führt der rote Faden vom verbrannten Auto zum Hausschwein? Also „Spitzt’s eure Schweinsohrn, los geht’s!“: es handelt sich hier um einen der pensionierten Darsteller des berühmten kleinen sprechenden Schweinderls der Werbespots für "Ja! Natürlich", die es seit 2005 gibt - und diese Werbekampagne ist so wie die für "Biedermann und die Brandstifter" am Volkstheater (u.a.: verbranntes Klavier, verbranntes Auto beim MQ) von der Werbeagentur Demner, Merlicek & Bergmann. (Regie der Ja-Natürlich-Werbespots: Stefan Ruzowitzky - 2008 Oscar für "Die Fälscher")

Weiters: Sauerei, solche Schweine, Drecksäue,... fällt so manchem als Schimpfwort bei Mißständen ein (auch bei den hier im Ablauf der vorherigen Uploads angsprochenen) aber das ist eine Diffamierung der Schweine.

Negativ besetzt sind sie auch in manchen Religionen, als nicht koscher zum Beispiel.... Und so gab und gibt es noch den Ausdruck Ketzerschwein (womit wir auch wieder beim Ketzer angelangt sind) - Schweine zählen zu den intelligenten Tieren!

Swimming-pool changing rooms for the Jewish Community Center of the Delaware Valley (Louis Kahn, with key contributions by Anne Tyng, 1952-1955; excellent restoration by Farewell Mills Gatsch Architects, ca. 2001-2010). Widely known as the "Trenton Bath House," this is one of those projects where I know neither where to begin, nor what I could possibly add. In architectural-history survey class terms, I see two big takeaways:

First, look at how much monumental effect Kahn and Tyng are able to give to this seemingly pedestrian program, out of a bunch of concrete blocks and a few pyramidal roofs framed in wood and tied together with steel! Embracing a Modernistic disinterest in applied ornament (apart from an abstract, geometric mural at the entrance), while reviving a pre-Modern, even pre-Classical acceptance of symmetry and axiality, they elevate a check-in counter, changing rooms, and toilet fixtures into a space of reflection, and a silent but grand presence on this eminently suburban lawn. Kahn's later protege David Rinehart opined that for his old boss, "every building was a temple," and you certainly see that here. (I also see Tyng's persistent interest in the organization of modules that inherently combine a geometric and a structural system.)

Second, linger on that point about how much this departed from the emergent mainstream of American Modernist practice by the early 1950s - the crisp smooth surfaces celebrated by prewar MOMA, the glass-and steel grids of postwar Mies and SOM. The inherent privacy needs of the changing-room program authorize Kahn and Tyng to explore effects of solidity and opacity. The walls are only one concrete block thick, but folded into pockets of space at the corners, and especially where those corners are forward from the frontmost pavilion, they look three feet thick, like the reused foundations of some recently excavated Bronze Age site. Even the ones on the changing rooms, which are kept in plane with the walls, are made to pop out a bit with vertical mortar joints (and a few extra inches of height granted by their concrete roof caps). In practice, most of these heroic nooks contain plumbing fixtures, storage and utilities, but there again you've got that elevation of the mundane. In any case, we have a kind of mission statement for how Modernism's sharp corners and flat surfaces offered the raw materials for something like the stereotomic masses of stone fortifications. James Ream, I reckon, was taking notes.

In practice, it's hard to imagine the experience being all that profound, exactly; I mean, you're twenty feet away from a bunch of kids laughing and splashing around. But it might be useful to think of this project, or cousins like Säynätsalo Town Hall, less in terms of turning everyday life into some cerebral or cosmic experience, and more in terms of bringing the cerebral or cosmic down to the realm of the everyday. No one's expecting you to fall to the ground in a reverie, but maybe they hoped to add a pinch of care to each of the days' activities, so that "have-to-be" spaces become "want-to-be" ones. I have a pretty vivid sensorial memory of the far less 'architectural' concrete changing rooms at my childhood's public pool: the sudden darkness after the bright sun, the smell of chlorinated pool water on concrete, the echo of feet slapping on puddles, and of course the lingering taste of inadvertently admitted mouthfuls of that water, mixed with the chemical flavoring of Airheads taffy candy. All that's missing is a prompt to pause and stay present in that moment of transition as the stuff of life.

Das Bataillon wurde zum Pionier-Regiment Nr. 23. Es diente zur Belagerung feindlicher Festungen.
