A mama gator hangs by her brood and will immediately come to their aid if she hears their distress call. Best not to mess with Mother Gator! Here’s a bucket-list image from the past of a little hatchling climbing aboard it’s mother’s head. (Alligator mississippiensis) (Sony a1, 200-600mm at 365mm, 1/200 second, f/10, ISO 1600)

This alligator tries to blend in with the swampy surroundings of Circle B Bar Reserve, Lakeland, Florida
This is from a set of RAW files I made in 2013 but never posted or even processed. I was looking for an image to use in tomorrow's blog post and this scene works for what I'll write about, so I processed it for the first time this morning.

From a recent trip to the Everglades. I was sitting on a dock, when I noticed this gator swimming towards me. It stopped right at the edge of the dock, and just looked at me and stayed there for five minutes or so. I think it wanted a friend. (Or maybe it was hungry lol!)

That's a gator in the same swamp nearby the Great Blue Heron - 2 months a year you can't walk in this area of the swamp because the gators are in heat and a bit too active. When I was there this year I had to throw rocks near them to get them to move back into the water so I could get by. Usually I live by the code of not interacting with wildlife but when it comes to gators I have strayed at times to ensure my being able to continue to take and post photos. Apologies to all gators. This one had just emerged from the green soup of the swamp covered with green growing organisms - which is why there is some green on its back.
Sometimes the gators swim into some orange water. Who can resist? (Alligator mississippiensis) (Sony a1, 200-600 lens @600mm, f/6.3, 1/400 second, ISO 1600)
This was the same gator as the one in the big boy shot. He was close enough that we could have reached out and touched him, a little disconcerting for a gator the guide had named Jumper.
