The 12,000-book Charles E. Thomas Library, named for the man who once owned the house. Its card catalog holds a small collection of books about the artist, a number of which are out of print. The small wood building, with its nooks for reading, is tucked in the woods at Prouts. The Charles E. Thomas Memorial Library was founded by Charles E. Thomas, an artist, who spent many summers on Prouts Neck. He, like Winslow Homer, was a bachelor and, though his headquarters were in New York City, it was said that "his heart was in his little home at Prouts Neck." He was a great lover of books and as a result bequeathed his cottage to trustees "devising that it should be used in perpetuity as a library".
Over the past 110 plus years the Library has grown through several renovations and additions which has allowed the collection to be expanded. It currently comprises a Children's Room, a Reading Room, and a Main Library Room with several reading nooks. In addition to a wide range of adult and children's books, the Library provides specific reference works relating to Prouts Neck and the surrounding area. Additional historical documents are on loan to and available through The Scarborough Historical Society.
