Yesterday Mark and I enjoyed a cracking if lengthy hike in an area that we hadn't ventured to before.

Our chosen hills were situated west of Snowdon. There is a lovely ridge that runs for a good few miles between Y Garn (one of nine hills and mountains in Wales that carries that name) and Garnedd Goch. Much of the ridge can be seen in this view. The real joy was the all round views that the hike gave. Much as I love being high on mountainous terrain I also like looking down from up on high to the coast. This hike offered first class views to the North Welsh coast as well as across to Anglesey and the west coast of Wales. Looking g in the opposite direction inland the views were dominated by Snowdon and its subsidiaries.

"Styracosaurus fait partie des dinosaures cératopsidés (à cornes). De proportions moyennes – il mesurait environ 6 m (19,5 pi) de longueur et pesait quelques tonnes –, il avait un peu l’allure d’un rhinocéros moderne. Comme d'autres dinosaures à cornes, Styracosaurus ne tenait pas ses pattes directement sous son corps. Les mâchoires de cet herbivore étaient davantage adaptées à trancher les végétaux qu’à les broyer.

Il n'existe qu'une seule espèce de ce genre bien connu : Styracosaurus albertensis, que l'on reconnaît à son énorme collerette allongée garnie d’épines ainsi qu'à sa longue corne nasale. En 1913, le paléontologue canadien Lawrence Lambe a nommé ce dinosaure Styracosaurus parce que les épines de la collerette évoquaient celle qui terminait les anciennes lances grecques : en grec styrax veut dire pointe. Quant au nom de l'espèce, albertensis, il rappelle le lieu de la découverte : l'Alberta.

Ce cératopsidé n'est connu que par les fossiles contenus dans les roches du Crétacé tardif datant de 76 millions d'années du parc provincial Dinosaur en Alberta (Canada). Parmi ces restes, on trouve quelques spécimens articulés de Styracosaurus ainsi que des concentrations d'os mélangés que l'on nomme lit d'ossements.

La présence de ces lits indique que plusieurs Styracosaurus sont morts en même temps lors d'une catastrophe, dont la nature n'est pas élucidée. On pense que, comme beaucoup de dinosaures à cornes, Styracosaurus se regroupait en vastes troupeaux et que l'une de ces hardes a pu être victime d'une inondation subite."

An awesome afternoon heading up to Y Garn via Llyn Clyd. As I topped out on the ridge line, the wind became ferocious. This foreground however was too good to miss. I managed to take a few handheld images, this being my favourite. Snowdonia has it's Winter coat on at the moment above 800m.

Situated in the north of the county near Strumble Head, Garn Fawr is a volcanic outcrop from the Ordovician period, approximatly 443 to 495 million years old.

If you ever find yourself in the area, It's worth taking a stroll to the summit of Garn Fawr. As here you'll find one of the finest Iron Age Forts in the county, thought to have been built around 2,500 years ago, offering some fantastic views towards Strumble Head and the rest of the north coast.

I've just returned from an absolutely fantastic weekend in Snowdonia. We even had good weather on all but one of the days. The crowning glory was a summit of Y Garn via Devil's Kitchen.

I'm looking to return in summer and wild camping up there. Until then, here's the view that greeted us at 947m above sea level

Macro Mondays "Twist"

S'il en a compté neuf autrefois, le village de Gertwiller a pu conserver deux fabricants de pain d'épices. Chacun de ces deux survivants s'efforce de promouvoir ses productions et agrémente la visite des clients éventuels, notamment des touristes, en leur proposant la visite d'un musée où l'histoire de leur activité et la présentation de leurs ateliers ne peuvent que mettre l'eau à la bouche ! Un grand choix de produits peut alors combler la petite faim des visiteurs, et aussi les inviter à prévoir les friandises parfumées qui garniront leurs tables pour les fêtes.

After seeing the fresh snow fall on Friday was determined to get some wintery shots around Snowdonia but most of Saturday was lost in low laying cloud until it was time to head back and was treated to some afternoon gold over the Glyderau

During a walk to Llyn Bochlwyd, light caught the peak of Y Garn above Cwm Idwal.

The night-sky over the Snowdonia peaks of Tryfan, the Glyderau, Y Garn and Garnedd Ugain, from a recent wild-camp on Foel Goch summit.

In Südtirol besitzt fast jedes Dorf eine hübsche, meist sehr alte und gepflegte Kirche. Sankt Andreas stammt aus dem 15. Jahrhundert.

I planned to climb Tryfan that day but it was a warm sunny day and Tryfan was in the shade so I decided to give this stunning mountain a go. It's a little higher than Tryfan but the route is easy with hardly any scrambles. Coming down Devil's Kitchen was a different story, especially as I missed the path for a section. I really want to do the Glyders next.

Garn Fôr is the most seaward of the three peaks of Yr Eifl, which rises sharply behind the village of Trefor in North Wales and looks out across the Irish Sea. Garn Fôr is also known as Mynydd y Gwaith, which translates as mountain of work, and was once heavily quarried for granite - some of which was used to pave the streets of London and, more recently, for making curling stones for the winter Olympics of 2006.
