Still lights after all these years.

Using my new garden twinkle lights to create pretty bokeh and do something creative with my beautiful Carnations, have a wonderful Mothers Day ~ KissThePixel2019

As someone said this was lit by God's light rather than General Electric's. (I am unsure if either of these exist in fact...)

After taking last night's sunset shot, I was fooling around taking some other shots in near darkness just for the fun of it. This is a shot of my neighbour's garden light and the small section of garden being lit by it. It is quite a low brightness colour changing LED light.

But this shot is more about the technology used in taking it, rather than the image itself.

There is an old rule of thumb regarding the recommended shutter speed for long focal lengths. Depending on who you believe, it is to either match the focal length, double it, or even triple it. In other words, my 800mm lens should be shot at between 1/800th and 1/2400th of a second handheld. As a tribute to today's amazing image stabilising technology, I was able to fire off ten shots in a row at this setting and all came out like this one. Hand held at just one sixth of a second! Maybe I have ultimately come up with a reasonably good camera holding technique over the time I have owned this lens, but you still have to love modern image stabilising technology and its designers!

Last night, we received our first snowfall for the season.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Grays, Essex*. Here are the details of the project

The 'Tropical Garden' in Grays, Essex RM17

BRIEF:

The space was an odd yet interestingly shaped garden, consisting primarily of lawn with good, sound fences. The client was concerned with privacy, as the houses on the opposite side of the road overlooked the front of the garden. In creative terms, the client wanted something contemporary and stylish, low maintenance, with ample space for entertaining.

SOLUTION:

The finished product is a space that is stylish and dynamic, yet at the same time warm and welcoming. To improve privacy, the entire boundary was augmented with bamboo screening. The majority of the space was laid with decking, split into sections set at angles to each other to make the most of the sun throughout the day.

The first decked area, directly outside the house, features a large hot tub spa to the left, which is shielded from view from the street by a split bamboo screen. A second area of decking runs on the left hand side down and across the space, to join a third and final area of decking towards the bottom of the garden.

A large flowerbed down the right of the space is graced with a selection of lush jungle giants, bold architectural foliage and big leafy specimens in a variety of textures. Striking bespoke stainless steel planters line the decking along the left of the space, planted with tall bamboo to provide additional screening. The slightly imposing nature of these planters is softened by the addition of Cordyline australis planted through cut-outs in the decking between one planter and the next.

The end section of decking features a beautiful stainless steel 'wall of water'. Set against the backdrop of bamboo screening, it provides an attractive and arresting focal point, whilst hiding the very bottom of the garden from view. Simple lighting, comprising low voltage spots in the bed, a line of sunken deck lights to illuminate the steel planters, and elegant steel bollards to demark the edge of the middle section of decking, serves to provide a gentle ambient wash for intimate nocturnal entertaining.

TESTIMONIAL:

"A very big thank you to all the team at Earth Designs for transforming my garden from a dull unwelcoming space into a vibrant, contemporary living area. My requirement was to create a garden that was low maintenance and contemporary, and which reflected my taste and the style of my house.

I was seeking a garden that would work well for both entertaining in the evening and relaxing during the day. I am very pleased that my new garden works on both counts and would be pleased to recommend Earth Designs both in terms of the design and attention to detail during the installation.

I now have a fun and stylish garden which looks good both night and day and fits in well with my lifestyle."

Dog themed solar garden lights at the Dollarama Store in Brandon, MB.

The tonal range of this picture exceeded my camera's range so I decided to let the whites (or highlights) go. I took the opposite approach in the next picture. There I let the blacks or deepest shadows go and kept the important highlights. The lights in this picture and darks in the next do not hold detail - but still communicate something important.

I played no part in setting this up, it was all Bee Bee's idea.. She just decided she was going to sit with the Ant... :)

#4498 - 2020 Day 115: Outdoor lights showing that they have endured a rough winter, but the prayers are all still fluttering ...

Vanochtend was alles wit!! Er is een flink pak sneeuw gevallen en het heeft flink gevroren.

Onze tuinlampen zijn versierd met mooie ijspegels.

When we woke up this morning, everything was white !! The country is covered with snow.

Our garden lights are being decorated with beautiful icicles.

A bit of a throwaway shot today as it's been a really busy day and I've not really had time to get out and so any photography and I've run out of steam now!

I put up an Ikea shelving system for the garden today...so you'll forgive my tiredness ;-) Actually, after a bit of a false start it went up pretty well and Debbie then filled it up with all the empty pots and bits and pieces that have been littering the garden. She also put up these solar powered lanterns which are there to help me with seeing what I'm doing in the bin area as it gets quite dark in the garden during the winter evenings.

It also gave me the chance to start practising the Nick Carver Precision Method for metering exposure settings...more for when using film cameras, but perfectly acceptable to use on digital cameras as well, as I did here with the Sony A6000. I set the camera exposure to meter the lanterns tones at between Medium Light and Very Light and got this excellent exposure...so it definitely works...and I'm not even close to half way through the course yet!
