Hamilton Gardens:

Hamilton Gardens is a public garden park in the south of Hamilton owned and managed by Hamilton City Council in New Zealand. The 54-hectare park is based on the banks of the Waikato River and includes enclosed gardens, open lawns, a lake, a nursery, a convention centre and the Hamilton East Cemetery. It is the Waikato Region's most popular visitor attraction, attracting more than 1 million people and hosting more than 2,000 events a year.
Hamilton Gardens is described in popular culture as a botanical garden, but does not technically qualify as a botanical garden. Instead, the site features 21 gardens representing the art, beliefs, lifestyles and traditions of different civilisations or historical garden styles. These gardens are grouped into the Paradise, Productive, Fantasy, Cultivar and Landscape garden collections, and there is space for gardens which are still in development.
The first development of the gardens began in the early 1960s at what was then the city's waste disposal site. The first substantial development, the Rogers Rose Garden, was opened in 1971 in an attempt to block highway development over the site. Since 1982 many newly developed areas have been opened to the public. Additional features of the gardens now include a lake walkway and a waterfall lookout.

Warriston Cemetery, which opened in 1843, was the first of Edinburgh's cemeteries designed in the 'garden style' by the architect David Cousin (1809-1878).
Cousin became a specialist in the design of cemeteries in the 1840s; he also designed the Dean (1845), Dalry (1846), Rosebank (1846) and Newington (1848) cemeteries.
Before Warriston opened Edinburgh's cemeteries and graveyards were overcrowded, unhealthy and dangerous places.
Body snatching had been commonplace until the Anatomy Act of 1832 and there were serious outbreaks of cholera in Edinburgh in the early 1830s and even as late as 1849.
The location of Warriston Cemetery on the outskirts of Edinburgh away from the city was significant therefore.
The inspiration for Warriston came from London's garden cemeteries of Kensal Green (1831), Norwood (1837) and Highgate (1839) which themselves had been influenced by European cemeteries such as Pere Lachaise in Paris.
Notable people buried at Warriston include Sir James Young Simpson, pioneer on the use of anaesthesia and the artists Horatio McCulloch and Robert Scott Lauder.

This photograph of the Pantheon in Stourhead was taken during our visit two days ago. It was an overcast and breezy spring day, in between drizzles. Stourhead is one of the famous gardens in the English landscape garden style and woodland. We enjoyed the walk and the various landscape views in the garden.
This photograph was recorded during a relatively calm interval, with the water surface of the lake less disturbed. The Pantheon style building and surrounds were reflected in the lake. The willow-like branches of a large tree in the foreground were selected to frame the building.
Automne dans les Jardins du château de Versailles. Automne time in the Chateau de Versailles Gardens , no. 47. October , 2019. No,250.
The Gardens of Versailles (French: Jardins du château de Versailles; French pronunciation: [ʒaʁdɛ̃ dy ʃato də versaij]) occupy part of what was once the Domaine royal de Versailles, the royal demesne of the château of Versailles. Situated to the west of the palace, the gardens cover some 800 hectares of land, much of which is landscaped in the classic French formal garden style perfected here by André Le Nôtre. Beyond the surrounding belt of woodland, the gardens are bordered by the urban areas of Versailles to the east and Le Chesnay to the north-east, by the National Arboretum de Chèvreloup to the north, the Versailles plain (a protected wildlife preserve) to the west, and by the Satory Forest to the south.
Administered by the Public Establishment of the Palace, Museum and National Estate of Versailles, an autonomous public entity operating under the aegis of the French Ministry of Culture, the gardens are now one of the most visited public sites in France, receiving more than six million visitors a year.[2]
In addition to the meticulous manicured lawns, parterres, and sculptures are the fountains, which are located throughout the garden. Dating from the time of Louis XIV and still using much of the same network of hydraulics as was used during the Ancien Régime, the fountains contribute to making the gardens of Versailles unique. On weekends from late spring to early autumn, the administration of the museum sponsors the Grandes Eaux – spectacles during which all the fountains in the gardens are in full play. Designed by André Le Nôtre, the Grand Canal is the masterpiece of the Gardens of Versailles. In the Gardens too, the Grand Trianon was built to provide Sun King with the retreat he wanted. The Petit Trianon is associated with Marie-Antoinette, who spent her time there with her closest relatives and friends.[3]
In 1979, the gardens along with the château were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, one of thirty-one such designations in France."

Last Friday I went to visit a friend who has a beautiful, rambling cottage garden: a haven of colour and greenery in the inner city. His roses are starting to bloom as the days grow longer and there is more sunshine. This includes a wonderful classic old fashioned French rose - Souvenir de la Malmaison.
“Souvenir de la Malmaison”, a shrub rose, was introduced in 1843 by Lyon rose breeder, Jean Béluze. The rose was bred as a result of crossing Rosa Madame Deprez (a Bourbon rose) with a tea rose, possibly Devoniensis, and was originally called ‘”Queen of Beauty and Fragrance”, which says a great deal about her looks and character. Her later famous name comes from Château du Malmaison in Paris. Malmaison was the home of Empereur Napoléon Bonaparte and his wife Impératrice Josephine de Beauharnais. Josephine loved gardening and she fell in love with the English garden style much to the dislike of Napoleon. Her passion were the classic roses, and she asked painter Pierre Joseph Redouté to paint all possible varieties in the Malmaison gardens. It would make Redouté famous. Interestingly, when hostilities existed with England and other European countries, Josephine was still able to buy roses from England. Her collection at Malmaison was the largest and most complete in the Western hemisphere. After her death the gardens were neglected and the rose collection was destroyed. The much-romanticised history of Malmaison sparked an unbelievable amount of rose breeders to produce thousands of varieties of the old classic roses. This is the reason why so many classic roses are French and from the second half of the Nineteenth Century today. Legend has it that the rose’s name was changed some thirty years after Josephine’s death to honour the estate, when the Grand Duke Michael of Russia obtained a specimen for the Imperial Gardens in St Petersburg as a present to the Tsar. However, this has subsequently been disputed and it is thought to simply be a lovely fictional story to add to the romance and history of this beautiful rose.
Spring has finally come to Melbourne after a long and grey winter, and everywhere, gardens are bursting forth with beautiful coloured blooms in a profusion of colours.
Stowe Landscape Gardens, which surround the late 17th century Stowe House in Buckinghamshire, date from the early 18th century and are a significant example of the English Garden style. They have been in the care of the National Trust since 1989. The 750 acres of landscaped grounds have 40 listed temples and monuments within them, and are based around two central lakes.
The Artificial Ruins and the Cascade, pictured on the left, were constructed in the 1730s. The cascade links the higher Octagon Lake with the Eleven Acre Lake, seen here. The ruins are a series of arches above the cascade built to look ruinous. At the rear of the lake is one of the two Lakes Pavilions, designed by Vanbrugh in 1719.
The historic palace and park complex from second half of the 18th century which holds the museum is the most impressive architectural feature of Dukla. Over the centuries this building went through three phases of thorough reconstruction. Around the middle of the 16th century a Renaissance castle was built, probably initiated by the heir of Dukla Jan Jordan under the crest of Trąby. In the next century the castle was left to run to ruin. It was only from 1636-38 with the efforts of the new owner, Franciszek Bernard Mniszech (the brother of Tsarina Marina), that the castle was restored within the limits of the bastion fortifications in the Italian style “palazzo in fortezza”. The works were completed by his grandson Józef Wandalin Mniszech, between 1696 and 1709. The next rebuilding period is connected with the last successor from the line of Dukla of the family Mniszech – Cracovian castellan Jerzy August Wandalin and his wife Maria Amalia from the Brühl family (the daughter of the minister of the treasury of the Saxon court). The Mniszech family moved in 1764 from Warsaw to Dukla after a quarrel with the king Stanisław August Poniatowski. Inspired by French fashion they reshaped the fortress into a palatial – park complex. The castle was enlarged, the main façade was turned from the south to the west and its sides, partly on old bastions, two annexes were built. In front of the front elevation there was a semicircular courtyard built and opposite the complex garden inspired by the symmetrical French garden style was created. This way a late Baroque residence of the “entre cour et jardin” type was built. From 1764-1778, the palace was one the important cultural an political centers of Poland. After the death of Jerzy and Amalia Mniszech the residence passed in the hands of the Ossoliński family, and later on the Stadnicki family. Wojciech Męciński came to possess the property after it was given to him as part of the wedding dowry upon his marriage to Helena Stadnicka. After the destruction of the palace because of the fire in 1821 and the occupation of the building by Russian army in 1849, Cezar Męciński, son of Wojciech, and his son Adam, started building and reconstruction work in 1875. The changes made led to the loss of many of the original features of the building. The Męciński family, taking inspiration from the English Garden style, also transformed the park, giving it a more naturalistic look. In 1925, the palace was taken over by the Tarnowski family.

The museum was founded after the organization of an exhibition in 1964 in one of the side annexes, showing the Carpathian – Dukla operation of 1944, one the biggest mountain battle of the Second World War. The initiative of organizing this exhibition, as well as organizing the museum in the palace belonged to members of the Polish Tourism and Sightseeing Society (PTTK) from Krosno, Rzeszów and Dukla. The opening of the museum was connected with the reconstruction of the parts of the palatial- park complex destroyed during wartime fighting. In 1968 the exhibition was subordinated to museum in Krosno, as a military department in Dukla. Organizational independence was gained by the museum in 1972 and it was renamed the Comradeship Museum. Between 1979-1982 the museum took over the 11 hectare park and in 1984 the museum’s exhibitions were moved to the main palace building. In 1991 it was transformed into a Historical Palace Museum in Dukla which from 1999 has been an organizational unit of Starostwo Powiatowe in Krosno. In the museum are presented exhibitions on the history of Dukla, the palatial- park complex in Dukla and battles in Carpathian during the First and the Second World Wars. Every year there are also exhibitions organized on different topics. There is also a heritage park situated in the courtyard.

Locked gate entrance to the Lowell Cemetery. This is a garden style cemetery dedicated in 1841. A favorite location of mine in the Spring and Fall for all the beautiful foliage and flowers. There are also very old ornate weathered headstones that I was hoping to photograph. The cemetery is supposed to be open at 7:30 but no one showed up to unlock the gates this morning.

Opened in 1915, Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden is one of the oldest and most visited Japanese-inspired gardens outside Japan. It is a blend of the ancient hill-and-pond style and the more recent stroll-garden style, in which various landscape features are gradually revealed along winding paths.
