The Ganges, Varanasi.

Portrait of an old Saadhu at the Garh Ganga Ghat, wearing traditional clothes with a turban. Wrinkled with a frown, eyes innocent and intent and gleaming with a little smile.

The Varanasi Ganges. Busy waterfront in a hazy morning. View magnified to have a better look.

Cloudy sunrise, Dashaswamedh Ghat. Merry Christmas to all my flickr friends and contacts. Please stay in and safe.

Mundana (Sanskrit: मुण्डन, lit. 'tonsure'), is the eighth of the sixteen Hindu saṃskāras (sacraments), in which a child receives their first haircut. The child's hair is shorn, frequently leaving only the śikhā or cūḍā, a tuft at the crown of the head. Traditionally , the hair from birth is associated with undesirable traits from past lives. Thus at the time of the mundana, the child is freshly shaven to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future. The rite is performed as a special ceremony in most homes, for young girls and boys. The shaven hair is offered to the Holy Ganges amidst prayers and Vedic mantras by trained priests. The family then performs special Yajna and Ganga arti.

Late morning post breakfast sauntering along the bank of the Ganges taking in sights and sound.

Spending time at Dashaswamedh Ghat watching stream of humanity coming to the river to take holy dip or something else...

Where some funeral pyres are active. Iconic part of an iconic city. Kindly look in lightbox or fullscreen. For the description of the place see my earlier posts of the place.

Painting on Ganga Ghat displayed at Chitra Santhe 2023, Bengaluru.

My travail along riverbank continues to offer fresh subjects. These boats looked inviting enough to hitch a ride to the other bank but the rapidly fading light and rising tide dampened my spirits!

Riding past Dashaswamedh Ghat where preparations for the evening Aarti has already begun. Please view large to get the atmosphere.

Varanasi (Hindustani pronunciation: [ʋaːˈraːɳəsi] ( listen)), also known as Benares, Banaras (Banāras [bəˈnaːrəs] ( listen)) or Kashi (Kāśī [ˈkaːʃi] ( listen)), is an Indian city on the banks of the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) south-east of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism, Ravidassia religion and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva as it has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city in older times was known as Kashi or "Shiv ki Nagri".

The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations. The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the Ganges. The city has been a cultural centre of North India for several thousand years, and has a history that is older than most of the major world religions. The Benares Gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed in Varanasi, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in Varanasi. Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, located near Varanasi.

Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. It is often referred to as "the holy city of India", "the religious capital of India", "the city of shiva", and "the city of learning". Scholarly books have been written in the city, including the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas. Today, there is a temple of his namesake in the city, the Tulsi Manas Mandir. The current temples and religious institutions in the city are dated to the 18th century. One of the largest residential universities of Asia the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is located here.

Dashaswamedh ghat, Varanasi.

Out of all the curves in Ranchi-Muri section of South Eastern Railway, this is arguably the most scenic one. The Up line (from Ranchi) bifurcates from the Down line (towards Ranchi) at Gangaghat and runs along in a different alignment up to this point where the two tracks meet just before Kita.

Our 18603 on the Up line spans over a small rivulet on its way towards Bhagalpur on yet another forgettable summer afternoon. The track does an S curve here at 90° twice.

Now Some Info on EMDGT46PAC : -

Variants -

There are three variants of this loco - the original WDP-4 which is a 4,000 hp (2,980 kW) loco, the WDP-4B which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW)126 t (124 long tons; 139 short tons) weighted loco with a single cab and the newest WDP-4D which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW) loco with dual cabs.

Performance -

The WDP-4 is capable of hauling 24 coach trains at 110–130 km/hour. It has also been used for speed trials where it has hauled 8 coach trains at 160 km/hour.

The locomotives can be used in either direction, and frequently haul trains long hood forward, as in the picture. Newer editions with 4500 hp have been produced which have been named with the sub class WDP-4B /WDP-4D which have different traction control with six traction motors and are Co-Co bogie equipped (more similar to WDG-4), unlike the original which has a Bo-1-1-Bo arrangement with four traction motors. Due to some controversies regarding visibility hindrances faced by loco pilots in driving long hood front, the basic WDP-4B model has been modified to dual cab to eliminate any such possibility. Other features of WDP-4B and WDP-4D are same. The cabs have a slightly wider profiles, to improve visibility.

Some of the WDP-4B/WDP-4D are spotted having provision for an inverter-driven head-end power unit, allowing running trains without a generating car (EOG) for hotel power.

The loco is very fuel efficient and has minimal exhaust emissions unlike ALCO based locomotives, thanks to its 2 stroke high efficiency diesel engine. It is characterized by its loud horn, which can be heard for large distances around, and aircraft-like sound of its running engine.
