I started replaying Super Mario Sunshine™ on my Nintendo GameCube earlier this year, so I was inspired to make a few builds inspired by the game, the largest of which is just over 10" tall, including the Shine Sprite base. This was a fun build since it incorporates a lot of newer round pieces such as 2x2 round tiles with holes, 2x2 round plates with single studs, 6x6 round plates, and 3x3 rounded macaroni bricks, and of course the Jurassic World Gyrosphere pieces that I used on my Gumball Machine a few years back.

First-timer creating a new object with Blender.

This new plastic helmet was designed in response to the number of related request received for my LEGO IDEAS project "Metroid: Samus Aran's Gunship":

I KNOW that new molds are not allowed for IDEAS projects, so this is just an attempt to convince The LEGO Group to change that rule. Other purist alternatives are also explored in the project's updates.

Even though I was born in 1999, the classic Sonic games are still very nostalgic for me because when I got my first console, which was the gamecube, I got Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic Mega Collection; which had Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles. So once I saw the announcement of Sonic Mania during the Sonic party live stream and Comic-Con, I was beyond hyped and it was my most anticipated game of this year! Now that I’ve played quite a bit of Sonic Mania, I’m ready to give my thoughts on the latest installment of Sonic’s adventures. Now is Sonic Mania bad like the last 5 Sonic games, or is this one just as good as the other 2D Sonic Games? Let’s check it out!

Good: If I were to create a metaphor for Sonic Mania, it’d be that this game is the Krabby Patty of video games. This game is an absolute gem, and it’s main reason is because it was made with love. When I heard that Sega hired Sonic fans to make this game, I was a little cautious. Now, I’m so glad that they made the decision to get Christian Whitehead to work on this game. I’ll never forget this man’s name, he and his team of devs saved Sonic. From the amazing opening animation, this game is made with pure fan love. The devs know what people like and don’t like about Sonic, and they’ve crafted the perfect 2D Sonic game. This game is beautiful in terms of visuals and the soundtrack and its gameplay is flawless and works like a dream. Sonic Mania captures the thrill and energy of going fast and reminds us why we love this blue hedgehog in the first place. With this game and Breath of the Wild, it just feels good to have a just a solid game. Unlike games like Injustice 2 or Splatoon 2, there are no catches with this game, you just buy the game and play it, badda bing badda boom. This game never slows down and it never gets dull with each level bringing new mechanics that never overstay their welcome. They’re there and they're a blast, but when you think it’s time for those mechanics to go, they go. But even then you’re still wishing to play them again. Another thing that’s great about Sonic Mania is its replayability. Like most 2D Sonic games, there are multiple paths to reach the goal, and each one is so unique, that you’ll want to go back and play it again. Not to mention that you can play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, which makes me want to beat the game with each character. The last thing I’d like to talk about are the boss battles. Now I’m going to be honest, I was never a fan of boss battles in previous 2D Sonic games, but Sonic Mania has fixed them. I think I can boldly say that Sonic Mania has the best boss battle that I’ve ever played in any video game EVER. I’m not going to spoil it, but when I played it, I was so pleasantly surprised. It was an actual boss battle that I wanted to play again, and I don’t think that’s ever happened before!

Bad: I only have one complaint with this game. My complaint is that I wish there were more newer stages than the olds ones. The new stages just were a lot more detailed and beautiful to look at. But even then, the olds ones felt new. I’m not a fan of Chemical Plant Zone, but this game actually made me love it. Oh shit, this is supposed to be the bad section. Fuck it, this game is basically perfect.

Overall, Sonic Mania is a return to why everyone loves the blue blur! I’m not going to call it a perfect game because my complaint still stands. Sonic Mania is a love letter to every Sonic fan and to the classic games that we’ve all grown up on. For these reasons, I’m going to give Sonic Mania a 9.9/10. It’s definitely not my favorite Sonic game, and it’s not my favorite game of the year, Breath of the Wild is ever-so-slightly better, but that doesn’t detract anything from this amazing game. I suggest you all go buy it if you’ve ever liked a Sonic game. Give this game as much support as you can, we need Sega to listen to us, this is how we want our Sonic games! This is a 12'x2'x2' custom A/V system cabinet Deb and I built. There are eighteen shelves, arranged in six columns of three; each column is 8.5" at the bottom, 8" in the middle, and 6.5" at the top. We made the piece out of 3 sheets of 1/2", 4'x8'x1/2" oak plywood and some 8'x2"x1" pine that we routed to serve as trim. Once cut and assembled, we stained it and gave it a coat of polyurethane. Total materials cost was about $60.00. Which is precisely why we build this stuff instead of buying it.

The requirements were simple. We had 12 feet of space horizontally; if we went over two feet vertically, the top of the unit (which is sitting on a raised stage, keep in mind) would interfere with the line of vision to the screen if you were reclined, which was unacceptable. Depth-wise we had flexibility, but by keeping it to two feet (which is more than sufficient anyway), it kept the required material to 3 sheets of plywood. With exactly two feet of height available, I had to come up with a shelf height combination that would add up to no more than that. It could have been two, one foot shelves, but that's really too tall for most gear. Still, some units (like a big home theater receiver) are pretty tall, and they like airspace for cooling, too. So I came up with a row of 9", a row of 8", and a row of 7", which adds up nicely to 24". The top shelf and the bottom shelf both lost 1/2" to the thickness of the outer boards, so in the end, it is 8.5", 8", and 6.5". High power units go on the bottom unless they are low profile and allow for room for convection, or have fans, or both (like the XBox 360 or PS2.)

This photo was taken from the bridge between the master bedroom and the music studio.

I use the area behind the audio gear as a short, wide photo studio. I have an 11'x15' green screen which assembles to hang in front of the TV screen, which allows me to put models in any situation I like while posing them locally (example here.) The room at the left (you can just barely see part of the door) is where I keep all the photo studio gear when it isn't in use. I generally shoot from the area in front of the audio gear, in the space between the beginning of the stage and the seating. I also use the top of the audio cabinet as a base for softbox photography of relatively small subjects.

This area used to be where the church leader would stand behind the lectern and speak to those in the pews. The raised area has turned out to be very useful, and our initial plans to remove the stage have been abandoned. Re-carpeting it, however, is still very much on the list.

So I recently put these two shelves in my game room today so I put my DS games, 3DS games, Wii games, Wii U games, and game guides on the left; and all my PS3 games, Gamecube games, movies, and Nintendo Powers on the right! Then I just put out most of my Sonic figures, a couple of my pokemon figures and a few of my Nintendo plushies!

Masha and I went through this abandoned house. It's was very beautiful but very eerie.

This controller was from my Nintendo GameCube I used to play when I was a kid. And this house had a "memory aurora" feel to it... If that makes sense. Written on a wall in the top of the house was a few paragraphs of people who had visited explaining how they remembered when the house when they were kids, and how they loved to come over and visit the family that lived there. Anyways, this combined with the nostalgic memories of my game controller sort of turned into this compilation of memory.

Solid Snake and Cyborg Ninja by Play Arts Kai.

Image inspired by a fight scene in MGS: Twin Snakes for the Gamecube. Snake only had the Socom in that scene, but whatever. Didn't play that version of the game because the cinematic sequences were too over the top for my taste.

Notes:

Only fx in this shot is a slight brightness and saturation enhancement to Ninja's eye. A less time consuming switch for me. :-p

I felt like doing a bit of design work, and this happened to nicely coincide with the upcoming 35th anniversary of the release of Game and Watch, Nintendo's first widely successful game console. Including all of the controllers from Nintendo's most important historical releases (not including XL versions of the handhelds), this spans 3 and a half decades of gaming.

I'm a huge fan of Nintendo, always have been. What Nintendo does well is they try new things - even if those things don't always work out (eg: Virtual Boy, WiiU, Game Boy Micro).

I started replaying Super Mario Sunshine™ on my Nintendo GameCube earlier this year, so I was inspired to make a few builds inspired by the game, the largest of which is just over 10" tall, including the Shine Sprite base. This was a fun build since it incorporates a lot of newer round pieces such as 2x2 round tiles with holes, 2x2 round plates with single studs, 6x6 round plates, and 3x3 rounded macaroni bricks, and of course the Jurassic World Gyrosphere pieces that I used on my Gumball Machine a few years back.

Okay, there are a few gaps in the collection: I'm still hunting a silver / gold and crystal screen editions of the Game & Watch range (I'm not prepared to pay £500 on eBay!). The Gameboy Light and the backlit Gameboy Advance SP (AGS101 model) are also fairly elusive. Roll on the 3DS!!
