I discovered a female Sapphire-throated Hummingbird (Chrysuronia coeruleogularis) while shooting from the balcony of the hillside cabañas at Casa Galú, Capurganá, Chocó, Colombia. She paused on a slender branch as the first Caribbean light filtered through palms, her iridescent emerald back and sapphire throat glowing against a softly blurred tapestry of tropical foliage. Framing her slightly from below allowed me to isolate her poised stillness and celebrate the garden’s intimate connection to the sea beyond.

From a technical standpoint, I used a Canon EOS R5 with an RF 800mm f/11 lens and 1.4× extender for a total effective reach of 1120mm. Locked at f/16, I raised ISO 3200 to lift detail from the garden’s shaded understory and relied on a handheld 1/30-second shutter to freeze her gentle movements. Controlled breathing and precise timing were essential to rendering every feather texture and subtle hue. This frame reflects my commitment to patient fieldcraft and meticulous exposure control in pursuit of images that inspire conservation.

This image features a female Golden-collared Manakin (Manacus vitellinus) perched slightly above eye level in the oceanfront garden of Casa Galú, Capurganá, Chocó, Colombia. Her olive-green plumage and subtle golden throat collar glow in the soft Caribbean dawn as the surrounding tropical foliage dissolves into a creamy bokeh, framing her poised stillness against the serene backdrop of this hidden retreat.

Shot handheld with a Canon EOS R5 and RF 800mm f/11 lens plus 1.4× extender for an effective reach of 1120mm, I stopped down to f/16 for sufficient depth of field. In the low-light conditions I raised ISO 3200 to lift shadow detail, while the 1/20-second shutter speed froze her delicate form. This frame reflects the blend of patient fieldcraft and precise exposure control necessary to capture fine feather textures and the nuanced hues of a species endemic to Colombia’s Pacific lowlands.

This photograph features a female Blue-chested Hummingbird (Polyerata amabilis) at Casa Galú, Capurganá, Chocó, Colombia. Taken in the early morning as soft coastal light filtered through lush garden foliage, she perches delicately on a vibrant red heliconia bract. Her iridescent emerald throat and subtle blue chest catch the first rays of dawn, contrasting beautifully with slate-gray wings and the creamy bokeh of tropical leaves in the background. The mood is one of hushed serenity, where every droplet of moisture and feather detail feels suspended in time.

From a technical perspective, I framed this image at eye level to emphasize the hummingbird’s poised posture and the graceful curve of her bill. A narrow depth of field isolates the subject, while careful metering preserves highlight and shadow detail across her plumage. Shooting handheld required steady technique and anticipation—waiting for that perfect moment when the bird paused between garden visits. This frame reflects the balance of patient fieldcraft and precise exposure control needed to reveal the delicate beauty of a seldom-seen female in her natural oceanfront garden habitat.

Two photos I took, almost half a world away from each other. The frame is from American Samoa and the sunrise from Vancouver, B.C. Had a little fun combining the two in photoshop. Hope you like it.

The village of Vaitogi in Tutuila (the main island of American Samoa) preserves a Polynesian fable of many generations: the legend of the Turtle and the Shark. The fable involves the viewing of two sea creatures in tandem who don’t usually swim together. The backstory has variations, but they all have the same simple storyline – two human beings (lovers or family members), who have been rejected by the society-at-large, jump off the lava-rock cliffs to their death and embrace eternal togetherness in the sea. Many a generation of Samoan villagers have summoned these two immortal souls ritualistically by singing traditional songs. Under perfect conditions (or, by pure chance), the condemned souls respond to human pleas and manifest themselves as the shark and the turtle. Upon seeing a shark or a turtle (or both), village children exclaim, "Lalelei, lalelei, lalelei!" (Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!). Today, the lava-rock cove (aptly called the ‘Turtle and Shark’) and this Polynesian folklore are open for visitation six days a week (except Sunday).

Of our four days in Tutuila, we spent three evenings at the cove but did not see any shark or turtle. Seeing these legendary animals would have been nice but that was not the primary purpose of our repeated visitation. The Vaitogi lava cliffs have several picturesque formations including one of the biggest blowholes on the island. At high tide, one can hear the ocean grumble under the rocks one stands on. I was intrigued by a purlicue-like formation (above), where angry tides swerved around and then crashed against the rocky ‘thumb’. Upon slamming on to the calm firmness of these rocks, the moody tidewater shattered into fluidic smithereens and created momentary but aesthetic fountains and waterfalls. Viewing them under psychedelic sunset colors was addictive and trance-inducing. In my trance, I heard faint songs floating in the warm seabreeze, perhaps sang long ago by Vaitogi children to summon the turtle and the shark.

“A ua'ina, a la'ina

A solo e mata'ina

Lou galu tu'u la le i'a…”

(“In rain or sunshine

Let us see you

Gaze at the fish…”)

And I whispered to myself, "Lalelei, lalelei, lalelei!".

Triund is a ridge that overlooks the Dhauladhars. The ridge elevation is between 2,810 and 2,875 metres. It is a one-day trek 10 kilometres (one way) from McLeod Ganj bus stand and under 6 kilometres (one way) from Galu temple near Dharamkot. The trail is rocky and cut in steps at some places. From Galu temple the trail starts as a gentle ascend till Magic View café. After the café, the ascent is a tad steeper, finally cumulating in a steep final one kilometre stretch through a forest of Deodars and Rhododendron. This final stretch through the woods is known as 22-curves, because of the 22 switchbacks that one has to walk through to get to Triund. .................................Wikipedia

This was right outside our house and was the backdrop for many photo shoots. Tried to get a sunrise through it but a) the mornings were cloudy, and b) waking up at 6am is WAY too early when you are on holiday.

Possibly the nicest stretch of beach I've ever seen. At low tide it was about 100 meters wide, almost no seaweed and powdery white sand.

Didn't suck.

This was taken several years ago. It is east of Pago Pago, American Samoa. Although not confirmed, I suspect it would have sustained damage from the recent earthquake and resulting tsunumi that hit the Samoan islands.

This is the door into an outhouse that was formerly used as a laundry at a house in Gunzenhausen, Bavaria, Germany. My wife's family - the Lehmann family - lived in the house very happily until the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s. They were hop dealers and owners of a thriving business selling textiles and haberdashery and were well respected in Gunzenhausen with Ernst, my wife's grandfather, serving on the town council. That all changed, almost overnight, with pogroms, antisemitism and violent Jew hatred. The family escaped to England, Argentina, Brazil, Kenya and British Mandate Palestine never to be re-united. When members of the Lehmann family visited Gunzenhausen in the mid 1960s, twenty years or so after the war, they recognised many people who took part in the destruction of the Jewish community living their lives as if nothing had happened.
