Crazy For You – Abstract Expressionist Wall Art

A bold, vibrant collision of color and emotion, 'Crazy For You' captures the electric chaos of passion through textured strokes and layered hues. Featuring rich tones of violet, burnt orange, emerald green, and pops of yellow and black, this mixed media piece makes a powerful statement in any modern interior. Add a burst of energy to your space with a one-of-a-kind abstract print that speaks to the wild side of love.

Sunporch for Spring/Summer 2007

This is probably as close as I'll ever get to an all white room.

Thanks JDD for the inspiration!! :D

I'm trying to redo my picture wall...how does this look?

The big one will be 12x18, the two sides will be 10x15 and the ends will be 8x12

Among the images that are most meaningful to us are those we've created.

Don't some belong in our Christmas decor?

In our home, we like to change galleries with the seasons.. It's so important to me that I've written an app to help with designing seasonal galleries.

The image above was captured by an iPad Pro's camera while I was exploring possible images, mats and frames for our Christmas gallery with the app and then shared to Lightroom. You're looking at snapshot of augmented reality that's combining virtual framed pictures with a real room corner that has a lamp, duck and white chest.

This is not the final gallery design. I'm sharing the image above to partially illustrate the range of mats, frames, colors and materials that could be used in a gallery. I snapped it while when brainstorming novel gallery designs with images I had shared from Photos and Lightroom.

We derive daily pleasure when we see our creations on the wall. I encourage you to print your photos and display the prints on your walls. Of course, you can help Flickr out if you use Flickr's print service. If you're interested in using my augmented reality app, called "Wall Gallery Designer", you can find it at Wall Gallery Design on the Apple App Store. The is also a Lite version available at or you can try the Lite version Wall Gallery Design.

"Runs" (ca 2006) is the contemporary color photograph by Marilyn Minter shown here while being considered by patrons of the San Antonio Museum of Art, Downtown San Antonio, Texas.

The large artwork presents a detail view of a woman whose lower legs have been bespattered with mud while wearing a pair of bejeweled, stiletto heels [Not a stretch of the imagination that it's a woman waiting for a taxi on a NYC sidewalk]. The photograph is an example of Minter's consideration of the complex view of femininity: glamorous and filthy; attractive and repulsive.

By contrast, the female museum guest who contemplates in front of the photograph is wearing a pair of patterned flat, lace-up shoes: a more practical take on feminism and self-expression.

Photography was permitted throughout the museum galleries.

Finally picked up a few more frames from the craft shop today so I could complete our gallery wall in the living room. I'm sure I'll be rotating images in and out of these frames as the mood strikes me, but right now I'm loving it! You may recognize some of the shots - both from me and also from Jenna, Joel, Brian and Ari! :) Don't be surprised if I hit a few more of you up for shots to decorate my home with. :)

Two extraordinary works by British photographer Frederick H. Evans are captured in this image from an exhibition at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. Displayed side-by-side, the silver bromide print Albi Cathedral France – Choir Ambulatory and the photogravure La Maison Bourgtheroulde offer a poetic meditation on architecture, light, and time.

Frederick H. Evans (1853–1943) is widely recognized as one of the foremost architectural photographers of the Pictorialist movement. His work is marked by a deep sensitivity to natural light and a spiritual reverence for sacred spaces. Here, the left photograph—Albi Cathedral France – Choir Ambulatory—draws the viewer into the tranquil hush of a gothic interior. Shafts of sunlight stream across the stone floor, illuminating carved columns and gothic arches in a study of divine geometry. The composition is masterful: Evans frames the space in such a way that it feels both expansive and intimate, inviting the eye to wander quietly through shadow and glow.

To the right, La Maison Bourgtheroulde shifts the focus to the exterior of a Renaissance mansion in Rouen, France. In contrast to the soft interior of the cathedral, this image presents a proud and intricate façade with sculpted ornamentation, turrets, and finely carved details. Evans’ use of photogravure—a process prized for its tonal richness—renders the textures of the stone and the layers of architectural history with clarity and gravitas. This is not just a document of a building; it is a portrait of place and permanence.

Together, these two prints represent Evans’ dual interest in the spiritual interior and the civic exterior—spaces built for different forms of reverence. The gallery’s lighting and neutral gray walls accentuate the tonal subtleties of the black-and-white prints, allowing Evans’ mastery of light and shadow to take center stage. The labels below the frames identify both works as gifts from Kent and Marcia Minichiello in 2015, a generous donation that enriches The Phillips Collection's holdings of early photography.

Evans, who abandoned commercial photography in favor of artistic pursuit, was a pioneer in advocating for photography as a legitimate art form. His refusal to retouch negatives and his meticulous printing process speak to his dedication to truth and clarity in his work. He famously declared he wanted his images to be "a record of the spirit of the place," and both pieces here live up to that ambition.

Photographing these two prints together honors Evans' legacy and invites reflection on how photography captures more than architecture—it captures atmosphere, intention, and emotion. Whether you're a fan of early photography, architectural detail, or the quiet resonance of historic places, this pairing offers a glimpse into the meditative beauty of Evans’ vision.

Nicholas Party’s Head (2018–2022) stands like a surreal sentinel at the Hirshhorn Museum, where it forms part of the Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection 1860–1960 exhibit. Though created well after the exhibit's chronological endpoint, Head was included as a contemporary “intellectual descendant” of the modernist movement. Bold, stylized, and gleaming with a pop-art polish, the sculpture features a towering red head with piercing green eyes, cobalt lips, and a glossed black coiffure. Set against a deep gray wall on a stark white pedestal, the piece exudes both simplicity and psychological intensity.

The Hirshhorn’s curators assembled Revolutions by combing through the museum's archives to identify artworks that capture the shift from traditional to modern art. While the exhibit is arranged roughly by decade, visitors experience it more like "wiggly streams of paint poured beside and atop each other." Party’s Head appears in this context as a visual jolt—a playful yet probing evolution of portraiture that nods to early 20th-century abstraction while anchoring viewers in contemporary materiality and color theory.

The artist’s signature use of large color blocks, dramatic shading, and cartoonish surrealism harmonizes perfectly with recurring themes of the show: abstract features, saturated hues, and experimental form. Though the exhibit predominantly showcases art from 1860–1960, Head cleverly bridges past and present. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and it exemplifies the Hirshhorn’s mission to highlight “cream-of-the-crop” work from its collection while keeping the dialogue between generations of artists alive.

Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection 1860–1960 runs through April 20, 2025. It’s a must-see for fans of art history, modernism, and contemporary commentary.

We've almost been living in our flat for a year now, and I still can't decide what to do with this wall. I know I want it to be a gallery wall, but exactly how I hang the pictures (and what pictures to hang), I don't know. I have the two big pictures, the red one, which is a poster I bought at the Saatchi Gallery in London, and the one with the two ballerinas which my best friend painted and gave me when I graduated from Uni. I also want to hang smaller pictures, photos of my family, my son's artwork, my own drawings... and so on. Anyone have any helpful hints? Please comment below, or better still on:

For week 22 of 52 Photographs (click the link to join the fun!), the prompt was to include every color of the rainbow in one still life photograph. Our house is full of color and there was no shortage of options, but I decided to shoot the gallery wall in my office. A mixture of photos, art prints, and original pieces by local artists, this wall is one of my favorite features in our new home.

Because every inch is valuable in any Manhattan apartment the large blank wall in the entrance hall demanded a use that turned this otherwise transient space into an engaging environment that caused people to stop and linger.

The solution is this gallery wall featuring a collection of black frames (and one red accent which mimics the piece of art in the previous photo). The frames are filled with photos of family and friends that have been converted to black and white using a color copier.
