It's Neo-Classic Space time! This, is the "Galaxy Tzar"
When asked to make a modular armed exploration craft, General Galaxy turned to what many consider to be the greatest multi-role modular spacecraft of all time... The "Galaxy Commander".
Thirty years later, when Earth Alliance command asked for an new starship to fill the role originally defined by the Galaxy Commander, General Galaxy looked back upon it's original design and after two years of development, released the Galaxy Tzar.

ABOUT:
Comparison of the Galaxy Explorer, the Galaxy Commander and the Galaxy Dropship. Sizes are similar but the Galaxy Dropship is loaded with details. Check it out at LegoIdeas.
Here it is.
This was my absolute favorite ship as a kid. It was insanely cool looking with the twin cockpits and guns everywhere. It used the new thin hinged canopies and featured two of the relatively new yellow space men as pilots. Add in the fact that it split into not two, but three sections, and it was the coolest LEGO set I had ever seen. In some ways it still is.
Building it in Micro Scale was a ton of fun. It required a number of reworks, especially when I realized that the proportions meant that the front half would be an even number of studs wide, while the back half would be odd. It all works, dividing into three sections.
Like the old Commander, the front half of the Tzar detaches and becomes one of the fastest, most heavily armed starfighters in the galaxy.
The rear half of the Tzar is an armed dropship, which can operate completely independent of the forward hull.
A really lucky find: measures 347cm x 252cm. It consists of 8 individual pieces, each 125 cm x 88.5 cm with transitions of about 1 cm to stick together.
We had to clear out my sons room for the picture...
All three sections of the Galaxy Tzar can operate in space, or in atmosphere, and as a whole provide an excellent vehicle for exploration of unknown, possible hostile starsystems.
Once the Tzar Dropship touches down, it can deploy an independent roving space station, which can act in a variety of roles including transmission hub, research base, or espionage center.
Relieved of the bulk of the Mobile Base, the Tzar's Dropship becomes a formidable support fighter, which can act as air to ground support, or a wingman for the main fighter.
With the arrival of Galaxy Commander, I finally completed the trio of Classic Space flagships!
928 / 497 Galaxy Explorer (1979)
6980 Galaxy Commander (1983)
6985 Cosmic Fleet Voyager (1986)
Here are all the parts separated. I'm very happy that I managed to retain so much of the functionality.
While I loved building the Galaxy Explorer in Micro, this was the ship I was dreaming about building. It's so much fun to have again, especially small enough to sit next to me on my desk.

Predictably, my favorite thing at the whole vast Model World show was the Lego stand. I was most excited about this ship, the Galaxy Commander, because I have one myself. I got it for Christmas when I was 10 and spent the whole afternoon putting it together. It separates into two parts: the front is the shuttle bit, and the back is a little lab module. Awesome!
