The female Baltimore Oriole perched on a dead stem and reaches down to pull strands free. This one worked for a few minutes untill it had a mouthful of fibers and headed off to put them to use.
The Gal Vihara (Sinhalese: ගල් විහාරය), also known as Gal Viharaya and originally as the Uttararama, is a rock temple of the Buddha situated in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in North Central Province, Sri Lanka. It was fashioned in the 12th century by Parakramabahu I. The central feature of the temple is four rock relief statues of the Buddha, which have been carved into the face of a large granite rock. The images consist of a large seated figure, another smaller seated figure inside an artificial cavern, a standing figure and a reclining figure. These are considered to be some of the best examples of ancient Sinhalese sculpting and carving arts, and have made the Gal Vihara the most visited monument at Polonnaruwa.
The images of Uttararama follow a different style from the images of the previous Anuradhapura period, and show some significant differences. The identity of the standing image is subject to a certain amount of dispute among historians and archaeologists, some of whom argue that it depicts the monk Ananda rather than the Buddha. Each of the images have been carved in a way that uses a maximum possible area of the rock, and their heights seem to have been decided based on the height of the rock itself. Each statue appears to have had its own image house, as indicated by the remains of brick walls at the site. The Uttararama was where Parakramabahu I held a congregation of monks to purify the Buddhist priesthood, and later drew up a code of conduct for them. This code of conduct has been recorded in an inscription on the same rock face containing the images of the Buddha
I had been eying this location for a while, waiting for my opportunity to get a shot. I was absolutely thrilled with the location and the conditions. I had to wait for a wedding shoot to end but they were gone long before sunset. This was the shot I got and It turned out fantastic!! Kris...
Yesterday 100s of thousands of women marched in all kids of weather for love and goodness. I marched last year but wasn't able to this year. This image of the gulls playing together (at least that is what it looked like) makes me hope that some day, our leaders will learn to play together. We can always have hope:)
Have a lovely day and again, thank you for you many visits!

This magnificent group of statues was built by king Parakramabahu which was part of the Uthararama Complex.
The first statute you will come across is a seated Buddha in meditation. The rock behind the statue is decorated with carvings of “vimana”. Four smaller Buddha statues can be seen on these decorations.

what to do on a hot sunny day? Take the dogs down to play in the lake... Looks like they all get along just great together. I was napping in the sun and got run right over by this exuberant bunch of buddies! They were fun anyway...
same spot as the dog and his man boat shot... out at the lower end of Northwestern Lake, just above the dam that has no fish ladder.
Actually, there is talk of removing this old dam... so that the salmon can run back up the river again and spawn up around Trout Lake... that would be pretty wonderful, and losing spots like this to play would be sad.
Life is like that, sometimes ya take the bad with the good and the good with the bad!
Deal with it.
Like right now... I wander around the house looking out window after window, and no matter which one I look out all I see is still more snow! I am looking for the one that shows me the scene in this photo!
Now, if you want to see serious snow shots, my niece in Trout Lake has posted their several feet of snow..
This Crazy Gal must be a good cook. The parking lot was packed when I took this photo. The Map is incorrect. This is in Kingsland,Texas Highway FM 1431
so... how did i get this zoo_gal name anyway? well.... i've always loved the name zoe. and although i wished my parents would have named me something exotic like that, they didn't. zoe is the greek word for life. zoe looks a lot like zoo. i love that saying, "it's a zoo around this place." it makes me think that it's a place full of life, full of character, wild and crazy fun! i do love animal print.... i know... i know. so... it just kind of evolved. i am a gal who loves life. i've been through a lot of crap and have come out the other side, and continue to go through a lot of crap. but it's a wild ride for sure.... and i love it. every minute of it. really. even though some days are harder than the next, i have a great husband and family that continues to remind me that i am alive. so that's it. the story behind the name.
what's the story behind your flickr name??? i'd love to hear it.
