The Stagg EKG is a variable temperature gooseneck electric kettle that's as beautiful as it is functional. Paired with an old school Melitta pour-over cone.
Melitta Bentz invented the paper coffee filter & porcelain pour over technique in her kitchen on 15 December 1908, and registered her invention at the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin. The cone shape of her filter & pourover have pretty much remained the same since 1937. There are many copies/clones/inspirations - but Melitta results in the fullest flavored pour-over to this day.

So the probe arrived today functional but with a window pinhole light leak somewhere. I may be able to block it with a speck of black paint, or perhaps I will have to do a RadFilm repair.
Anyway to get started quickly I put on one layer of household aluminum foil and tried it out on my Nucleus Quantum 8 MCA, which is way slow for the nanosecond class pulses from the plastic scint. But with 1107 volts applied I can get some interesting spectra with the probe sitting on a 1/4 inch lead sheet on my K-40 bench top.
The left half spectrum is from a C-14 source. The .010 inch plastic scint is thick enough to absorb the incoming betas completely (156 KeV max).
The right half spectrum is from Kr-85. With hotter betas (687 KeV max) some are blasting right thru the thin scintillator partially or completely undetected. But some fraction of the very hot ones manage to expend most of their energy in the scintillator so there are definitely higher energy pulses produced than with the C-14 run.
The right hand spectrum, (I am guessing) is the sum of a normal beta shape (limited on the left by my foil window kluge, about half the amplitude of the left spectrum) plus an added peaking from the superior detector efficiency in the range from the window cutoff to about 150 KeV (where the beta range charts say .010 of plastic can absorb fully).
Or, if you like, standing on the other foot, a full amplitude normal beta shape but with a big subtraction going on due to detector efficiency dropping off big time above about 150 KeV.
I did run checks of the gamma contribution of my Kr-85 source, and of course background alone. Both are not consequential to the above spectrum shapes. There is a marker on the baseline placed to indicate where the second half spectrum begins.

On the last day of the year-long Faslane 365 campaign, around 700 protestors from around the country went back to Faslane for a Big Blockade, shutting the entrances to the gate for several hours.
I didn't get any photos on the day, as I was too busy blockading and didn't really have any hands free. These photos were taken in the week after, during which I stayed at the Peace Camp.
