C'était le jour des premières. Et quelle première ! Un des plus gros hyménoptères d'Europe. Presque 5cm de long ! Malgré sa taille très impressionnante, cette espèce n'est pas agressive du tout. Elle possède bien un dard, mais il lui sert à paralyser les hôtes de ses larves. Nous avons pu la photographier de très près pendant un moment sans qu'elle se préoccupe de nous. Elle volait d'ombelle en ombelle de sureau, décollant un peu maladroitement (normal vu le poids de la bête !).
Elle pond ses œufs dans les larves de plusieurs gros coléoptères, principalement le Scarabée rhinocéros (Oryctes nasicornis), mais aussi le Lucane (Lucanus cervus), le Hanneton foulon (Polyphylla fullo) et le Grand hanneton (Anoxia villosa).
Elle a un passager clandestin sur elle, sous l'implantation de l'aile. Un acarien, très probablement Mésostigmate. Il semble pratiquer la phorésie, car il se baladait librement dessus, et n'était pas accroché à elle à la manière d'une nymphe qui se nourrirait de ses fluides.
De soort is verwant aan de meikevers maar met zijn bijna 4 cm toch een slagje groter. De soort eet dennenaalden, vandaar dat deze Scarabaeidae vooral aangetroffen wordt langs de kust bij dennebossen.
De soort vliegt van zonsondergang tot middernacht en beweegt overdag nauwlijks.
Een vrouwtje van de julikever heeft 5 segmenten aan de antenne zitten terwijl de man er 7 heeft

Male of Polyphylla fullo, a beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae, subfamily Melolonthinae (the largest of the European Melolonthinae).
Albufera RAMSAR site, Mallorca. Sadly, I found this fabulous beetle dead on the main path into the site. Makes a cockchafer look rather tame!
An interesting pattern of the newly hatched nymphs and their egg shells, found in Luk Keng Village.
My curiosity drove me to visit the same spot six days later. I was so amazed that the nymphs have grown from a size of about 3 mm into last stage nymphs of nearly 1 cm in length. The egg shells were intact. So I've been mistaken in thinking that the newly hatched nymphs had been consuming the egg shells at time of my shot as nutrition. The strong wind and their fast crawling movement prevented me from taking a good macro picture. With this bigger size and the grown appearance, I could easily identify these nymphs as being a class of shield bugs called Erthesina fullo.

夏天的夜觀, 常常可以見到各類椿象若蟲集體孵化的場面, 好像蟲蟲在開營火晚會的大景, 雖然說是大景, 但實際上規模也小得可以, 拍攝微距的時候常常會有無法交代實際尺寸的問題, 所以可以技巧性的帶入旁邊葉片上的的水珠, 利用水珠作比例尺, 大概說明一下這場營火晚會的實際尺寸...
