I was going to an f-stop Gear Pro event in North Macedonia earlier this year and thought I'd stop by Kosovo on the way. The main reason was to photograph this unique library. It's the type of building you love or hate. I think most people hate it, but I think it's fantastic in its brutalism.
I got up super early and went there about an hour before sunrise to watch the light chance. Thankfully the sun found a way through and with all the clouds, I decided to do a long exposure to really bring out the golden hour colours.

This is the view looking northerly from Rim Trail near Mather Point. You can see the north end of O'Neill Butte, the Tonto platform, the South Kaibab Trail piercing across the Tonto to the Tipoff, and Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch along Bright Angel Creek.
I took a little winter trip to the South Rim. Hardly any crowds at this time of year. Temperatures in the upper 20's during the day, mid teens at night with windchills into the single digits. I am well prepared for these temperatures and was comfortable most of the time. I stayed at the El Tovar Lodge.

Sunrise at Neist Point Lighthouse in Isle of Skye, Scotland. Mountains of South Uist in the North Atlantic Ocean can be seen ahead in the right.
If driving 1,300 km around Scotland was an awesome experience, then visiting Neist point Lighthouse was the icing on the cake ! Neist point is the western most point of Skye and this Neist Point Lighthouse has been there since 1909. Good hiking adventure in this place.

This is a 30 second timelapse of a thunderstorm that rolled through just north of the Little Missouri River in the North Dakota Badlands. Wind, rain, hail, lightning, and tornadoes were the result of this incredible storm. The sun set amid clear blue skies creating some stunning effects as it passed by.

The best light up here in arctic Norway is at sunset in the early evening around 21:00, or at night at sunrise around 03:00. Since I work best at night, I often end up taking sunrise photos. And it must be said, I usually end up having to tone down the colors in the pictures, it is extremely rare that I add color.
I just can't seem to get enough of this photogenic pond near Spearfish and Belle Fourche, SD. This is another in-camera double exposure taken around 3:30am of the waning November Supermoon.

Lakhta Center architectural concept will be created based on the project which was previously designed to be constructed on Okhta promontory in Krasnogvardeysky district. The project will be significantly revised and adjusted to the new location and site layout. As assessed on a preliminary basis the costs for the adjustment of the project of the business center which was approved earlier in Lakhta will be not more than 30-50% of the cost of the design and approval of the new project. Furthermore the existing project of the business complex has passed through all state authorities which acknowledged its compliance with the relevant standards and requirements which will accelerate the construction of the new center by 2 years and significantly reduce the costs of the design and approval of the new project.
The project of a business center with a high-rise landmark and base buildings was selected as a result of an international architectural contest conducted by the investor in 2006. The winner of the contest was RMJM company (Tony Kettle Design Director) which proposed a project complying with the requested functions of the future headquarters of a large energy company and concordant with the architectural traditions of Petersburg.
Petersburg was created as a city of horizontals. A flat lowland dictated buildings relatively even in height, and in some spots accentuated with high-rise ensembles. The spire of the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Admiralty, the doom of the St. Isaac’s Cathedral are city forming landmarks with architectural ensembles around them.
The role of the high-rise building envisaged in the concept of a business center is played in the creation of an architectural accent of a business center which will be constructed on the former industrial and un-built areas. Without competing with the traditional city’s landmarks due to the remoteness from the historic buildings, the high-rise ensemble on the coast of the Gulf of Finland will be a city forming element and a draw of attraction for a new development project and business in a new developing district of the city.
The main architectural motives of Petersburg are reflected in the concept of a business center. It is a theme of a lonely spire in the horizontal landscape, and leaning base buildings symbolizing the ship hull, and maritime theme of wave-like bearing structures. An organic form of the building symbolizes the power of water, the flow of space, openness and lightness. The effect of free fall and maximum blending of the future complex with the environment will be emphasized by the glass of a special type, owning to this glass the tower will change its colors creating a feeling of a living being.
At present the architectural concept is being revised which will enable to insert the buildings of the future business complex into new surroundings on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. Young Russian architects will be involved in the work related to some parts of the project including the embankment and berths.
The architect’s task was to implement the project of a new ultramodern skyscraper in the city with a rich cultural and historical context, the historical centre of which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Tony Kettle, the author of the architectural concept of the Lakhta Center: “The flowing forms of water, the glinting spires of the Peter and Paul cathedral, the size of the sky canvas above the horizontal grain. My sense was very much to create something that was as light and elegant as the historical forms, capturing the changes in daylight in a similar way to that of the golden domes and spires.”
“The tower was designed as a simple organic spire with asymmetrical movement in its skin, to be seen as a singular landmark at city scale. Underlying the simple elegance of its exterior there are actually five individual twisting towers, each with its own glazed skin. These come together and taper around a diminishing circular core, enveloped by a further insulating skin.”
This is how Lakhta Center will look like in 2018, a multifunctional public and business complex, which core will be the HQ of Gazprom Neft company and its subsidiaries.
Over half of the areas will be occupied by public functions: a scientific and educational complex, a children’s center for amusing science, a planetarium, exhibition halls, a health center, a multifunctional hall for congresses, conferences, theater performances, musical and costume shows, a cinema center and a sports center, an open amphitheater and a few more public services including a bank branch, retail shops, restaurants, cafés, etc.

This small village on the northern shore of the Gulf of Finland, about 15 km north-west of the city, is the birthplace of human settlements on the banks of the Neva. It was in the territory of Lakhta that the remains of a man’s camp of three thousand years ago were found.
In official documents, the settlement named Lakhta has been dating since 1500. The name is derived from the Finnish-language word lahti - "bay". It is one of the few settlements that has not changed its name throughout its 500-year history. It is also known as Lahes, Lahes-by, Lahes and was originally inhabited by Izhora. In the last decades of the 15th century, Lakhta was a village (which indicates a significant number of its population) and was the center of the same name of the Grand-Ducal volost, which was part of the Spassko-Gorodensky pogost of Orekhovsky district of Vodskaya Pyatina. In the village there were 10 yards with 20 people (married men). In Lakhta, on average, there were 2 families each, and the total population of the village probably reached 75 people.
From the marks on the fields of the Swedish scribal book of the Spassky Pogost of 1640, it follows that the lands along the lower reaches of the Neva River and part of the coast of the Gulf of Finland, including Lakhta Karelia, Perekulyu (from the Finnish "back village", probably because of its position relative to Lakhta) and Konduya Lakhtinsky, was granted royal charter on January 15, 1638, to the possession of the Stockholm dignitary, General Rickshulz Bernhard Sten von Stenhausen, of Dutch origin. On October 31, 1648, the Swedish government granted these lands to the city of Nuena (Nyenskansu). With the arrival of the Swedes in the Neva region, Lakhta was settled by the Finns, who until the middle of the 20th century constituted the absolute majority of the villagers.
On December 22, 1766, Catherine 2 granted the Lakhta manor, which at that time belonged to the Office of the Chancellery from the buildings of palaces and gardens, "in which and in her villages with yard people 208 souls" to her favorite, Count Orlov. Not later than 1768 Count J.A. Bruce took possession of the estate. In 1788, the Lakhta manor with its wooden services on dry land (high place) and the villages of Lakhta, Dubki, Lisiy Nos and Konnaya, also on dry land, were listed there, in those villages of male peasants 238 souls. On May 1, 1813, Lakhta was taken over by the landlords of the Yakovlevs. On October 5, 1844, Count A. I. Stenbok-Fermor took possession of the Lakhta estate, in which there were then 255 male souls. This genus was the owner of the estate until 1912, when his last representative got into debt and the nobility was established over the estate. On October 4, 1913, the count, in order to pay off his debts, was forced to go into incorporation, and the Lakhta estate became the property of the Lakht Joint-Stock Company of Stenbock-Fermor and Co.
After the revolution, Lakhta was left to itself for some time; on May 19, 1919, in the former estate of the Stenbock-Fermor estate, the Lakhta sightseeing station was opened, which lasted until 1932. In the early 1920s, sand mining began on the Lakhta beaches, and the abandoned and dilapidated peat-bedding plant of the Lakhta estate in 1922 took the Oblzmotdel department under its jurisdiction and launched it after major repairs. In 1963, the village of Lakhta was included in the Zhdanovsky (Primorsky) district of Leningrad (St. Petersburg).
