The United States Forest Service built the 70-foot tall tower in 1941. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The steel tower atop the 5,340-foot Fryingpan Mountain was built for views to watch for fires until the early 1990s.

We were heading home from a good day in the stream and the picture was here right after a storm so we stopped for two minutes to try to capture the moment.

We went up the Frying Pan tower as far as the second deck. It was fine until the stairs to the second deck started to shake...and this is top of a hill? mountain? and we decided we did not need to be that high up to take photos!

 

(We did have excellent cell phone reception though. Hah.)
