Exidiopsis effusa

First chance this season to capture some Hair Ice.

I'd seen a few patches 2 days ago and they were still there this morning. It'll all be gone tomorrow until the next cold snap...

Today I found Hair ice, also known as ice wool or frost beard. It is formed on moist, rotting wood with a certain type of fungus. Each of the smooth, silky hairs has a diameter of about 0.02 mm. It is rare and only there when the conditions are right.

Hair ice forms on moist, rotting wood from broadleaf trees when temperatures are slightly under 0 °C and the air is humid. The hairs appear to root at the mouth of wood rays (never on the bark), and their thickness is similar to the diameter of the wood ray channels. A piece of wood that produces hair ice once may continue to produce it over several years.

Each of the smooth, silky hairs has a diameter of about 0.02 mm and a length of up to 20 cm. The hairs are brittle, but take the shape of curls and waves. They can maintain their shape for hours and sometimes days. This long lifetime indicates that something is preventing the small ice crystals from recrystallizing into larger ones, since recrystallization normally occurs very quickly at temperatures near 0 °C .

Sicherlich eine der ungewöhnlichsten und sonderbarsten Formen, die Wasser annehmen kann.

Filigran, vergänglich und äußerst zerbrechlich.

Albus did the Engorgio spell on this candle and made it huge. He's peeved at me though because after I deboxed him, Kate and I were laughing at his buff Ken body and his wand flew out of his hand. So I have lost the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand in the wizarding world. I tried "Accio wand!" but nothing happened, sigh.

The candle is from Frostbeard on Etsy. They have wonderful scents like Divination Classroom (incense and Earl Grey tea) and Sherlock's Study (fireplace, cedarwood, lemon) and Winterfell (evergreen forest and bonfire).

... no no, a fungus needs to be. But in the mushroom identification book and on wikipedia I find nothing similar, grows on branches lying on the ground in the beech forest. Looks really like a snow-white beard.

Can anyone of you tell me what that is? Is definitely something natural, I've seen it at various points always to the old branches.

During a rare snowfall in Ol' Chumbucket's home town, he, Mad Sally and the little Chumbuckets took the opportunity to craft this piratical snowman. Which prompted Cap'n Slappy to burst into song:

"Frostbeard the snowman

Was a saucy, scurvy soul

With his plastic sword and his pirate beads and carrot for a nose

Frostbeard the snowman

Was a pirate tale they say

He was made of snow and say, "Down me blow!"

He got words mixed up that way.

"There must have been some magic in that pirate hat they found

For when they placed it on his head he called for rum and bought a

round.

"Oh, Frostbeard the snowman was alive as live can be

And the children say he would not belay

Playing limbo with a tree.

Lumpity-lump-lump Lumpity-lump-lump

Look at Frostbeard go!

Lumpity-lump-lump Lumpity-lump-lump.

Limbo-ing very low!"

You can't make this stuff up.

A sunny morning spells the end of the fleeting frost flower that has grown through the night during a fall/early winter hard freeze. Being in the right place at the right time will afford one a glimpse of this ethereal ice/frost formation. Like awareness of the state of the environment the right time, place and action will pay off dividends for all.

Frost flower is a rare natural phenomenon in which a hairy , woolly ice structure formed of dead and wet heartwood , not on the bark of trees .

Frost flower can occur when the air temperature is just below freezing. In the timber for coming fungi and arrives at the metabolism of these fungi , inter alia, water -free , which is forced out through very small openings in the wood ( wood rays). The outward -pressed water freezes into a hair -like structure. High humidity is necessary for the successful formation of frost flower so it can not evaporate out pressurized water remains available for freezing . As long as the fungi continue to produce water and climatic conditions remain favorable , frost flower can continue to grow . If the air temperature is too low, the metabolism of the molds drops to such a low level that there is insufficient water is being produced.

Another close-up view of the thin inches long threads of frost, "growing" on the rotting log. The air temperature was a little below 0 C (32 F) when I came across this sight.

Frost flowers grow when water inside the log freezes and is squeezed out through the pores of the log, forming long thin strings of ice crystals that look uncannily like hair ie: "frost beard". Frost flowers are also known as "ice beards".

Et nærbilde av det snodige rimskjegget som hadde grodd på den råtne trestokken i skogen på Barkåker, utenfor Tønsberg.

In the middle of a forest I came across this interesting "creature". For a moment I thought it was a weird kind of mold, growing on the rotting log. But grabbing some of the fluffy stuff in my hand I realized how cold it was and noticed that it melted in my hand. It's actually frost!

The same phenomena was reported by the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten a couple of weeks later, and they identified this as something called frost flowers in English. Oh, and the Met office published this article on the same topic a month later.
