Also known as Rüppell's Griffon Vulture, this species was given an IUCN status of critically endangered in 2015. Only eight years prior, in 2007, its IUCN status was "near threatened", and it was subsequently degraded down through "vulnerable" and "endangered" to its current status. The BirdLife International Fact Sheet for this species estimates that there are only 22,000 individuals left in the world. The biggests threats are poisoning (a technique used to kill predators of livestock, this species and other carrion feeders are also impacted), medicinal purposes, and habitat loss. This species is also considered the highest flying bird in the world. There is documented collision with a commercial airliner at 37,000 feet (the bird was sucked into the engine, killing the bird; the engine was shut down and the plane landed safely).

Sometimes, I feel so tired...and so discouraged...that I wish I could pull a Rip Van Winkle...and fall asleep for 100 years...and wake up later to see how it all turned out. And I wouldn't even care how long my beard grew while I slept. Just so long as my sleep was uninterrupted.

This is the second in a series of photos of the "Stanley" family, taken November 01, 1903 at a gypsy encampment in Corey Hill Park, Brookline, Massachusetts by Thomas E. Marr, of Tremont Street in Boston. This is one of a set of silver gelatin prints I bought about 40 years ago at a flea market. The seller had a table covered with boxes filled with carefully organized, original T. E. Marr 7.5 x 9.5 inch silver gelatin prints. If I had the money I'd have bought the whole load, and more if he had any. In looking through the lot I discovered a dozen gypsy encampment photos, sequentially numbered by Mr. Marr. I asked if there were more gypsy prints and he said that those were all that were in the huge collection. I bought all twelve. Mr. Marr must have spent an entire day roaming through the encampment carefully selecting subjects to photograph. The shots look carefully composed, with the various figures positioned almost as if done in a studio. Here's a link to a short publication (19 pages) regarding Gypsies in America, available on Google Books. The information it contains is really interesting, some dealing with gypsies in the greater Boston area:

The vardo in this image is about the most basic there is... being simply a covered wagon with a drop-front canvas screen. Smaller side panels are fastened with snaps and can be rolled up for increased ventilation.

Here the matriarch of the clan is flashing what is probably her best attempt at a smile for the "dinlow" behind the camera.

Who would have thought that such a beautiful place could be inadvertently stumbled upon - just outside Watford!

UPDATE! March 01st 2012.

This photograph has been bought by the very lovely and talented 'Slakah the Beatchild' an independent record producer and singer/songwriter based in Canada; for his new album released this year (2012) under the name of his altar ego 'Slakahdeliq'. The album is called 'The Other Side of Tomorrow' and is available for digital download here, on a 'free or pay what you can basis' (as of Feb/March 2012 anyway).

Check it out if you get a chance, you never know you might discover a musician you never knew you liked! :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had numerous cameras and film with me - so it's been interesting how each combination of film and camera has responded to what was for me, a joyful and unexpected discovery. (The sensory memory of which, bottled somewhere deep in my limbic system, will live with me more powerfully than any image.) I'll be 'drip-feeding' you all images from this poppy field well into the Winter I suspect! ;)
This one - part of my ongoing experiments with Redscale - moving from the blunt application of that banging colour, to explore other possibilities beyond that...The first roll was shot almost exclusively along the environs of Stokes Croft, Cheltenham Road & Gloucester Road and mostly graffiti. The intention of the second roll was to find mainstream advertising or images from more affluent areas of the city, or more pastoral/non urban environments. I did not line up the film, nor take notes, nor plan beyond striving for the principle of contrasting subjects. The negatives were returned uncut as requested, but I did get lab scans - any overlaps of one frame over another, are a result of this. I have cropped where I feel it is most helpful to do so, so any inclusion of frame overlap is these uploaded images has been an active choice. I will almost certainly return to the negs with a home scanner to search for alternative compositions to complement these.
In some cases I have found the results quite 'dark' and unsettling in mood - quite a refreshing departure for my stream. I plan to explore this some more.
Redscaling.
Basically it involves taking a roll of ordinary 'bog standard' print film, reversing it and respooling it into another film canister (all done in a dark bag) so that the light is exposed on 'the wrong side of the film' when you take a shot. You then lose two 'stops' on the optimal exposure conditions from the original. It gets developed in exactly the same way as print film, but be prepared for the technician to be a little startled (at best) or a little irritated (at worst) when they realise that something very odd has happened to the film. :)
What would Iceland be without ice ? I was very surprised and happy to be able to see this beautiful nature in Jökulsárlón, never seen this before in all my travels, for a moment I stared at it ....and then went to work with my camera :) Jökulsárlón is the best known and largest glacial lake in Iceland. It is located south of Vatnajökull Glacier between Skaftafell National Park and the small town of Höfn...
The Cover
“Some gents relish coffee breaks, others favor pie breaks, with a milk chaser. Artist Steve Dohanos’ scene might be called a fine example of business reciprocity, each man helping to stimulate consumption of the other man’s product. Or call it barter: no money passes hands, and if there must be front-office bookkeeping on what is consumed, maybe it can be charged up to routine spoilage – the boys are spoiling it all right. Come to think of it, couldn’t a full-course meal be mobilized by expanding this noble idea? For instance, bringing Joe’s Butcher Shop into the club should bring in a steak, and wouldn’t one of those milk cases make a pretty fair cookout grill? Then of course a merger with an ice cream firm would top off the situation admirably. Pie à la mode.” – the Editor
It is finnaly publised !! ahhh!! What a birth !!
I am so happy , you have no idea . Even so when pushed the button to publish it I felt sad ... now the characters don't belong to me anymore , they are out there living their lifes and there is nothing else I can do. They are independent now . It is sad ... really , hahahah!! After months working with the characters I started to like then as they as they were here by my side .
The Title is Alemão as you can see on the cover with a photo made by Maren Wieczorek . The backcover was made by me . haha!! Is a book writen in English with a title in Brazilian Portugues that means German.
Is this an edgy and polemic novel? Ahhhhh.... come on !!! How can you think that ? When something polemic have come fron me in all this time you know my work? I am gentle and inofencive as a sweet breeze on the prairie.
It was all written and published in English.
"A love story between two characters that grew up together and decided to give up of understanding or belonging to the world creating their own values ans life style . The story happens in São Paulo city , Brazil and in a small town named Campos do Jordão , Brazil's inside country. Among crimes , sexual violence and ruined familys the novel exposes contemporary values by the point of view of who lives at the other side of the concept of globalization and new world. Alemão means German in Brazilian Portugues and the subject imigration of Germans to South America is an important issue for the characters . Writen by Caio Fern. 242 pages".
Plus : after the novel I published on the last 6 pages a short tale named : Giny, Araucaria and the Mountain.... as the landscape is the same and the two characters of the short tale appear on the novel too. I have posted this short tale few times in many blogs , but now it is all revised by Sandy Gunderson. As all the book.
I do hope you enjoy reading this novel , only for 9 dollars, a real bargain.
Norman Rockwell met a budding artist and young soldier from Washington State stationed in western Massachusetts in 1960. With a furlough coming up, he wrote to his idol, Norman Rockwell, asking if he might be allowed to visit. Receiving an unexpected invitation by mail, he traveled to Stockbridge and was introduced to the artist. “You’ll do,” said Rockwell on seeing his visitor, and he was cast on the spot as a leering window washer. – From “Behind the Camera” by Norman Rockwell.
“In the final months of World War II, Norman Rockwell delivered ‘The Homecoming’, his highly resonant cover illustration for the May 26, 1945 issue of ‘The Saturday Evening Post’, published just eighteen days after the surrender of Germany. The timely and emotional image tells the story of a young soldier arriving home, where family, neighbors and even a love interest rush to greet him with ecstatic joy. With his back to the viewer, the message focuses less on the war’s effect on the Marine and more about the family’s jubilation around their loved one’s safe return. Deborah Solomon writes, ‘In the center of the composition, a redheaded grandmother opens her arms as if to welcome not just her boy, but all the sons who served in the war. America welcomes you home, she seems to be saying.’ (‘American Mirror: The Life and Art of Norman Rockwell’, New York, 2013, p. 233). Complete with Blue Star Flags hanging in the windows, each star representing a family member serving in the war, the message of hope and reunion in ‘The Homecoming’ inspired the U.S. Treasury to reproduce the image as a promotion for the final War Loan Drive with the slogan, ‘Hasten the Homecoming…Buy Victory Bonds’. . . .“
Some of you might remember this pic of Macey.....I posted this picture under another shot of Ms. M. and several of you thought it should have been posted on it's own. Well, due to your comments and advice I sent this picture into a Cat-elaine contest. I'm afraid I didn't win the years supply of cat food (ha!) but I love this keepsake front cover shot of my queen kitty! :))
