The Torrey Pines Gliderport is a historic aviation site with nearly 100 years of flying history. The Gliderport was instrumental in the development of several new technologies including the first Robinson variometer (1939), which was a sensitive instrument used to determine the rate of climb or sink. John Robinson’s Zanoonia sailplane, built in 1939 was the first aircraft in the nation to use spoilers (air brakes) on the wings, which are still used by aircraft today. Bob Fronius invented the first aircraft parachute recovery system which was flight tested at the Gliderport in 1947.
In the late 1960s the first radio controlled model airplanes were designed and flown at the Gliderport. Then in 1970s the first hang gliders graced the bluffs of Torrey Pines, which became the most influential flying and development site for the modern era of foot launched aviation. The Gliderport then saw birth of paragliding in the mid-1980s.

Simply placing the panels on the roof would also have caused complications with roof maintenance over the years. With the combined solution, we chose the Sanyo PV panels, which are translucent, providing a beautiful pattern, and filtered light below. The main structure was welded in a metal shop and lifted into place with the secondary structure welded on after. This process was the fastest, and by far most precise way of assemblage. The whole project was constructed and wired in two weeks, minus painting and tree trimming.

In October 2018, Austria's first green in-house hydrogen refuelling facility was opened in Thalheim near Wels. Here, hydrogen is produced from solar electricity and water by electrolysis. The hydrogen is stored and is available for refuelling H2 vehicles. It can be stored seasonally and, if required, converted back into electricity and heat by means of a fuel cell. This will also enable an innovative coupling of the electricity, mobility and heat sectors.
