It was exactly 50 years ago that Axel Springer laid the foundation stone of his Berlin publishing house. 20 years ago the Berlin Wall fell. In order to celebrate these occasions, Friede Springer unveiled the “Balancing Act” sculpture by Stephan Balkenhol on the forecourt of the Axel Springer Building on the 25th of May 2009.

The 5.70 m high work of art – a man balancing on a wall – is framed by eleven original pieces of the wall. In the heart of the capital of a united Germany, it symbolizes the power of freedom and self-determination.

Endlich habe ich es geschafft eines meiner Lieblingsfotos aus der Nicht-digitalen-Zeit zu digitalisieren.

Lieblingsfoto, weil manchmal einfach nur der Moment zählt. Einen Moment, den man nicht nachstellen oder wiederholen kann, der aber immer bleibt: Ausgewogen, stimmungsvoll.

Aufgenommen 2002 in Myanmar (Burma/Birma), in einer Zeit der Militärdiktatur, während dem Hausarrest von Aung San Suu Kyi. Die Militärdiktatur herrscht auch heute noch immer dort, aber das Land ist aus der völligen Isolation erwacht und Aung San Suu Kyi zumindest nach 15 Jahren aus dem Hausarrest entlassen. Ich habe es kennengelernt als Land des Lächelns, was tiefe Eindrücke hinterlassen hat. Es ist ein faszinierendes und geheimnisvolles Land mit einer liebenswürdigen Bevölkerung.

Ich erinnere mich immer an dieses Land, wenn in Deutschland Demokratiemüdigkeit einsetzt (geringe Wahlbeteiligung). Wir haben Demokratie und wissen es viel zu wenig zu schätzen.

Burma, Birma or Myanmar as it is called by the Military Junta, is a country where magnificent and ancient Buddhist temples gaze out serenely over a nation restless for change. Burma has plenty of wonders for the eye--sinuous, life-giving rivers, lush mountain forests, and intricately-drawn cities--but it can also trouble the soul. For the last 30 years, its people have been ruled by a notoriously repressive military government, the tatmadaw. But I never see so many people smiling and laughing. Its a wonderful country with wonderful people.

I always remember this country when using democracy fatigue in Germany. We have democracy and don´t appreciate it.

Dieser Bauernhof beim Abstieg ins Weißenbachtal gibt dem Übergang "Lechner Bergerl" ins Seebachtal seinen Namen. Die Wandmalerei mit den Füchsen finde ich entzückend. Und auch den Spruch "Freude dem der kommt, Friede dem der hier verweilt, Segen dem der weiterzieht" finde ich sehr schön. Ob es im Weißenbachtal wohl besonders viele Füchse gibt ?

This farm on the descent into the Weissenbach valley gives its name to the "Lechner Bergerl" passage into the Seebach valley. I find the wall painting with the foxes delightful. And I also find the saying "Joy to him who comes, peace to him who stays here, blessing to him who moves on" very beautiful. I wonder if there are many foxes in the Weissenbach valley ?
