The Riaux passage, until now unwelcoming for the people of Toulon, offers an immersion in the depths of the sea thanks to the creation of a fresco which invades its walls and ceilings.
The work was carried out in the greatest secrecy. No sketches or photos of the progress had been leaked. We only knew the theme, the sea, and the request made by the municipality: to tell an immersive story.
On July 23 2025, the mayor of Toulon, Josée Massi, discovered the Riaux passage and its two completely transformed tunnels at the same time as the first visitors.
Located in the heart of the city, just opposite the Natif store, this passage was until now neglected by locals and tourists alike because it was unwelcoming, particularly due to the smells it gave off and its darkness.
Now it's time for a dive into the abyss. Upon entering the first tunnel of the Riaux Passage, the Les Mains Sales collective has created a trompe-l'oeil that takes the visitor on the trail of the Sémillante and the Arroyo, which, in their history, sank off the coast of Cap Sicié. Divers, wrecks and the blue of the sea adorn the walls and ceiling of the Riaux.
"We like to tell the story by starting from reality while adding a touch of fantasy," says one of its creators who, like all members of the collective, wishes to remain anonymous.
The reality is that these ships did exist—but they didn't fail. The fantastical part is that while searching for them, humans discovered something lurking in the water and decided to study it. So they built an underwater base, Telo Nautilus (Telo being the old name for Toulon). It's the second tunnel that serves as the backdrop for this base for studying the mystical depths. Here, the color red is dominant.
An immersive and collective fresco
A dozen pairs of hands participated in this project, which required two months of brainstorming and three weeks of on-site implementation.

Graphic designers, painters, visual artists, and even amateurs were mobilized: "Anyone can become a dirty hand. We prepare the work and trace the design so that they can best deploy their skills," explains the one we will call, at his request, Anonymous 1, founder of the collective. Like a coloring page whose outlines are already drawn and where all that remains is to add the right color to the right place.
Little-used passages now places to visit?
For the inauguration, the collective proposed a sound ambition of the seabed which is not supposed to last "but we will negotiate so that it remains because it brings something extra" hopes Anonymous 1.

He would like these tunnels to become landmarks in the city, which is "full of hidden places where no one goes." " That's why we didn't want to approach it in an 'arty' way and why residents don't wonder why we did this in front of their houses."
"The passage will become a place of visit," hopes the mayor of the town.
