Can you believe these little characters beat their wings up to 400 times per minute, in swift flight. Literally blink and you've missed them
They use their little wings to actually swim underwater, using their feet to change direction
I'd not seen a puffin in real life previously and couldn't believe quite how small they were
The one thing you see first is their bright orange feet and bill, the latter is shed after mating season and is replaced by a shorter duller beak.
The numbers sighted have been reduced this year, possibly the bird-flu epidemic could have taken it's toll
They appear to be such inquisitive little characters and it was uncertain who was watching who
Can you believe they are still hunted in Iceland and The Faroes, even though recent autopsies have revealed these charismatic seabirds have been eating plastic pellets, known as nurdles.
A similar scenario happens with Minke whales
We as a human race, the supposedly intelligent species, have a lot to answer for

If my memory serves me correctly, this was the former Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church. According to Florida Memory State Library and Archives of Florida, it was established in 1890. It was sold and moved to this present location and renovated. It is located in a beautiful area on the outskirts of Chipley, Florida in Washington County.
Big Eagle RR heads back to the mine in North Hollow after interchanging 20 loads with CSX. GMTX 2115 is seen here passing the Old Glory Freewill Baptist Church in Winifrede, WV

I was looking at Google Maps to see where I took the photo and happened to notice that there is an active church nearby. After searching some genealogy websites, I found a picture of the original church that looks like this building minus the plywood over the windows.

In as postcard of a scene as you’ll ever find along the tracks, southbound Q693 passes the Toe River Freewill Baptist Church at Huntdale, North Carolina as it winds it’s way through the beautiful Nolichucky River valley on it's trek to Waycross, Georgia. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful stretch of the former Clinchfield.

Fog hangs just above the trees around Toe River Freewill Baptist as unrebuilt SD70AC # 4801 grinds south leading Q693-29. In 2019 when this was shot, these were a rare sight with most being in storage awaiting rebuild, as well as the SD50-3 trailing third out of frame.

Was it a mirage? A real Clinchfield F-Unit in the thick of the night at Huntdale Freewill Baptist Church?! Pinch Me- IT'S A MIRACLE!! A saturating rain caused some quick work by a whole host of people. Together we all pulled off a great (but quick!) setup shot at this very Clinchfield scene, deep in the Toe River Valley at Huntdale North Carolina.
In a classic Clinchfield scene, veteran CW44AC # 15 leads M693-17 south by Toe River Freewill Baptist in Huntdale, Nc.
I have visited this church for the past three years, and then several years before that. I am not remotely a religious or spiritual person, but I'm drawn to this place.
Maybe it's the "Watch Out For Snakes" sign on the cemetery gate. Maybe it's the skies, the atmousphere, the land. Or maybe there's an all-seeing sky bully who controls everything and I have no freewill of my own to resist it.

It's 4:40 am in Huntdale on a 33 degree November morning. The silence is broken by the sound of squealing wheels and flanges on the sharp curves along the North Toe River as K706 passes the classic Clinchfield scene at the North Toe Freewill Baptist Church.
Southbound time freight Q693 makes its daily appearance in Huntdale, passing the iconic Toe River Freewill Baptist Church. This is perhaps one of the most famous and certainly most documented scenes along this beautiful piece of railroad.

It was a dark and stormy night as Clinchfield F7 800 paused at the well-known Toe River Freewill Baptist Church. It was a surreal event to witness this ghost of the Clinchfield appearing in the Carolina darkness.
Many people were responsible for this event, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have taken part in this photo shoot. It will go down as a once in a lifetime event.
