One Giant Hoot for Owlkind celebrates the wonder of looking up at the stars and the planets and imagining the solar system beyond. The scene is inspired by 1960s posters, cartoons, packaging and ephemera, commemorating space-travel and the moon landings. Vicky’s childhood fascination with outer space is charmingly ‘encapsulated’ in this witty, intergalactic adventure.
Artist: Vicky Scott
Freelance artist and illustrator from London, who has recently moved to Brighton. Over the last few years, she has worked on a diverse range of projects – Christmas cards, an album cover design for the band Stereovenus (featuring the singer, Rumer), and huge paintings for The Elephant Family in their 2010, 2012 and 2013 projects (where she painted designs onto models of a baby elephant and a giant Easter egg). These designs were both auctioned off for charity, raising thousands of pounds for the Asian elephant and children’s charities in the UK.
Vicky describes her style as graphic, colourful, fun-filled, nostalgic and quirky. She finds her inspiration in a variety of places, including: the everyday, nature, humour, stylish Art Deco designs and the wallpapers of William Morris. Her illustrations are created using a variety of techniques, such as pencil drawing, paper collage, paint and Photoshop. They always maintain the same eye-catching and uplifting feel.

Auction Price: £6200
The Big Hoot captured the imagination of everyone in Birmingham and beyond, with hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets with their Big Hoot Trail maps to explore the colourful invasion of individually designed owls. Taking in the city’s 10 districts, tourists and residents alike enjoyed their owl adventure, discovering and celebrating the extraordinary creativity produced by many of Birmingham’s artistic community and over 25,000 young people.
The Big Hoot owls went under the hammer on 15 October 2015 at The Big Hoot auction sponsored by Vodafone and we are thrilled to have smashed our target by raising the incredible sum of £508,035!
The money raised from the auction will support Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity’s £3.65m Star Appeal. This appeal will enable us to create a first of its kind, a Rare Diseases Centre in the UK specifically for children. It will provide co-ordinated care, treatment, support and most importantly hope to children and families living with a rare or undiagnosed condition.
In addition the auction raised £15,000 for G’owl’d by Temper with proceeds going to Edward’s Trust, and £7,800 for Fleet and Free with proceeds going to Birchfield Harriers.
So thank you - we simply couldn’t have done it without you.
Artists have played a major role in The Big Hoot, creating almost 100 owl sculptures. We would like to thank all the artists for their incredible creativity and hard work.
Professional artists from Birmingham, the wider Midlands region and further afield have created extraordinary giant owls that are all unique in style and character and represent the city’s creativity, history and heritage, music, fashion, architecture and attractions.
Birmingham is home to a wealth of artistic and creative individuals and communities and many award-winning and nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. We are delighted with the response from Birmingham’s creative community and are thrilled to work in collaboration with them to transform the streets, squares and parks of the city.
For five months artists have been creating owls in their studios, at home and in The Big Hoot Artists’ Studio at the Custard Factory in Digbeth. Their inspiring and innovative designs have been realised in genres including graffiti, illustration, fine art, graphics, typography, mosaic and new media. They have worked with both community groups and with corporates to realise ideas and create their stunning designs.
The Big Hoot not only provides a high quality and ambitious free public event for families but also supports the creativity of artists and celebrates talent and diversity. The Big Hoot has provided an inspiring relationship between the city and the arts.
The artists have also reached out to communities enabling more people to participate in the arts, to experience working with professional artists and to be inspiring and inspired. From the north to the south of the city residents groups, youth groups and older peoples’ groups have been collaborating with artists to generate ideas, design and create owls for The Big Hoot.
Creativity is everywhere but the opportunity to participate is not. A range of activities have been programmed within Birmingham’s diverse communities and people from the age of 3 – 97 and from wards within the city boundaries have contributed to The Big Hoot and helped make the event extraordinary. Our projects have seen artists working with hundreds of residents and community members including children in looked after care, older peoples’ clubs, young people and residents organisations to design and decorate the owls displayed as part of the 10 week public event.

Some shots from Star Citizen
The Freelancer MIS is a limited edition militarized variant of the classic mercantile ship developed by the UEE. These were produced in very small quantity due to some early payload incidents. This version sacrifices the majority of the cargo capacity to make way for missiles.
Star Citizen is an ambitious crowd funded open world space simulation project from Chris Roberts (Wing Commander, Freelancer).

Standard issue combat equipment for the Freelance Operative class.
My biggest project yet. All in glorious 0.7.
Allow me to go into each weapon briefly.
[Modular Offensive Weapon System, a.k.a. MOW-Sys.]
A redo of the poorly built TRS-6400 and the AIWS series. It is a double barreled weapon that can have its barrels switched with others to assign different firearms, or to double up on one. A camera above the two main barrels feeds visual information to one of two foldable side screens, assisting in blind-fire and corner shots. It also features a Metal Storm launcher and crossbow attachment.
Its main feature is its All-Fire mode, or more commonly known as "Overkill Mode". Switching to this fire mode on the secondary selector allows the user to fire all three weapons at once.
[Gauss Sidearm System (GSS)]
An amalgamation of several sidearms I've built over the years, such as the (PD)MP18, Artemis CPW and XMP-08 up to the AGP-10 and ARS-556, as well as existing firearms such as the Beretta M9.
It is a modified version of the AGP-10 gauss pistol, with greater electricity conversion abilities and refire rates. Features a tactical PDW chassis with Picatanny rails.
[Surface to Surface/Air Missile 9 (SSAM-9)]
A step up from the HB-SAM/SAM-6 with surface to surface targeting abilities and increased missile capacity. Also features a blast shield for defense.
[Multipurpose Spring Knife, Model 1 (MSK-1)]
An improved Spetsnaz spring knife with increased muzzle velocity and blade durability.
[Hybrid Ordinance Charge]
A multipurpose grenade that can be filled with lethal substances. A switch can change this grenade into a time bomb, laser trip-mine, or a proximity bomb.

Helsinki365 is a photo project carried out by a Helsinki based freelance photographer Jussi Hellsten.
What does Helsinki look like? How does it feel – how do I feel it? Although I have lived in Helsinki for several years now, it still feels unfamiliar to me. This year-long project is my chance to explore the city in a new way and from a different perspective. The year 2012 is also a special year to be photographing Helsinki, when the city serves as the World Design Capital.
