The non-Federal sponsors requested assistance to develop a comprehensive planning framework for the restoration and management of the Chicago Area Waterways within the City of Chicago to include the North, South, and Main branches of the Chicago River; North Shore Channel; Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal; and the Little Calumet, Grand Calumet, and Calumet Rivers. The framework study includes identifying and inventorying existing waterway conditions; synthesizing available data and performing a gap analysis to identify future data collection needs; and identifying ecosystem restoration, flood risk management, and recreational improvement opportunities. The framework seeks to facilitate future planning, investment, management, stewardship and programming for these uses.

FY 21 Activities:

The study was initiated in FY21. Data compilation and analysis, identification of challenges and opportunities, and formulation of potential measures to address them will be ongoing throughout FY21.

FY 22 Activities:

The study will be completed, and a final report issued in December 2021.

Issues and Other Information:

You can see how differently the two woods look in this shot. The greyed wood looks rich with the layer of aquatech on it whilst the original wood has a vivid orange/salmon colour which should with time in the sun and air fade to partially match the rest
