A large thermohaline cell (affected by both temperature and salinity) characterizes the general circulation in the Mediterranean Sea. Circulation is driven by the water balance deficit and by the heat fluxes between the sea and the atmosphere. The water deficit, caused by greater evaporation than precipitation and river run-off, is mainly compensated for by the inflow of Atlantic water through the Straits of Gibraltar and by the water contribution from the Black Sea through the Straits of the Dardanelles. The exchange of heat with the atmosphere, leading to the cooling and subsequent sinking of surface waters, also contributes to the thermohaline circulation.

Tourism contributes CO2 emissions, mostly through increased use of air and road transportation. Beyond that, the major direct pressure from coastal tourism on the marine and coastal environment is the demand for space, both in the coastal zone, resulting mainly in urbanization, and on the coastline itself, through construction of marinas and other infrastructure that leads to concretisation of the shores. The concentration of tourism within specific geographical areas and limited time periods increases pressure on natural resources such as fresh water and leads to higher rates of sewage and solid waste production. Coastal tourism is, by definition, located in sensitive habitats within the coastal zone, such as beaches, sand dunes, and wetlands. The unavoidable result is change in the state of these habitats and their associated ecosystems, as well as economic impacts on other activities that benefit from coastal ecosystem services. Unsustainable development of mass tourism will result in the rapid degradation of fragile natural habitats (EEA and UNEP 1999, UNEP/MAP/MED POL 2005).

The month of April was dedicated to raising-awareness activities, training, learning and promotion of professional development of young girls in the Information and Technology Sector (ICT).
The month of joint activities between UNESCO and the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications took place in the framework of UNESCO’s YouthMobile initiative. Created in 2014 by UNESCO, the initiative offers introductory courses in computer programming (learning-to-code) and problem solving (coding-to-learn). The initiative targets young boys and girls to acquire basic technical skills and the necessary confidence for the development, promotion and marketing of mobile applications that address local sustainability issues. By 2017, the initiative’s overall objective is to allow at least 25,000 young people to develop the skills of the 21st century to fully participate in addressing the challenges of sustainable development in their communities. The initiative introduces young people to entrepreneurship to create viable employment opportunities in the mobile phone industry and ICT Sector.
Among the activities planned for the month of April, open days in large companies and ICT innovation centers were organized, mobile development initiatives, trainings in coding, and JIGGEN CI TIC caravans throughout the country, which will bring together women leaders in the public and private technology sector with the aim of educating young girls and advocating for increased ICT production and use to further encourage women to pursue studies and careers in technology and innovation.
In this album we present a selection of pictures from Open Door Days, JIGGEN CI TIC caravans, training of young girls in E-commerce and of the International Girls in ICT Day, which took place on 28 April 2016.

Here I have revealed a view of 1991 in the current day ICC Canal entrance, to show the construction of the centre as it was being built. The central entrance is now a stunning glass covered focal point, but here you can see the framework that holds that glass structure together.

Legal frameworks, including national laws, human rights law and – in armed conflict – IHL aim to protect IDPs. IHL prohibits the forced displacement of civilians by parties to a conflict– unless it is justified by imperative military reasons for the security of the civilians themselves.
The ICRC puts a premium on reminding parties to conflict of IHL, ensuring that armed forces and groups are aware of it, monitoring compliance with it and making representations as appropriate.
