Gryphon A seen here being moved from a birth she had been at for over a month by a total of six tugs. The Gryphon FPSO is normally located 175 miles north east of Aberdeen. The vessel is 260 metres long and 41 metres wide. It is capable of storing 540,000 barrels of oil. n FPSO is a large floating vessel that acts as a production facility for the oil fields below the sea bed. A complex series of pipes and tubing connects the vessel to the oil and gas wells on the sea bed. The FPSO is moored to the seabed via ten 35-tonne anchors 1,100 metres away from its normal location. The anchor chains lie on the sea bed for 900 metres, before rising upwards to the FPSO.
All anchor chains and the various piping, which transports oil to the FPSO, injects gas into reservoirs, or sends controls and signals to and fro, are connected up through the FPSO’s turret – a central ircular section in the middle of the FPSO, seen more clearly in some other photos. While the turret always stays facing in the same direction so that the various connections do not get entangled, the FPSO can rotate around it in order to always face into the wind. This ensures the stability of the entire FPSO and the piping system.
While on station on Feb. 4th 2012 with high waves and wind speeds of 56 knots, the FPSO lost its heading and began turning so that the wind battered its sides. The FPSO began rocking. At some point in this sequence of events the FPSO began moving off its position. Power was also lost for 30 seconds. These events lasted 10 minutes, by the end of which the FPSO had moved off its usual position. The oil and gas wells on the sea bed were shutdown immediately. However, in that short time, four of the ten anchors broke and serious damage, resulting in her being taken under tow as most of her 112 man crew were evacuated. She has been in Rotterdam for some months now,
Image above showing perspective of various piping on board a very large crude carrier (VLCC). The pipings include cargo line, steam line, return line, bunker line, Cowing line, MARPOL line and also together with cargo manifolds with its drop line to each cargo tank.
VLCC normally length about 300+ meters long and constructed with 14+ cargo oil tanks. As viewer can see, 2 midship cranes SWL about 20 tons each, are provided to lift up a big loading floating hose from FSO, FPSO, refinery or any other oil tankers and connect it to cargo manifold.
Oil then will flow via cargo line to each tanks and then being exported around the world. Its a very long process and journey, but the experience is priceless !
As for the image, it was taken by Sony DSC-2000 compact camera and going through PP to create purplish clouds with HDR touch to boost all the details and enhance the colors.

... A floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore industry for the processing of hydrocarbons and for storage of oil. A FPSO vessel is designed to receive hydrocarbons produced from nearby platforms or subsea template, process them, and store oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker or transported through a pipeline.
FPSOs are preferred in frontier offshore regions as they are easy to install, and do not require a local pipeline infrastructure to export oil. FPSOs can be a conversion of an oil tanker or can be a vessel built specially for the application. A vessel used only to store oil (without processing it) is referred to as a floating storage and offloading vessel (FSO).
Oil has been produced from offshore locations since the late 1940s. Originally, all oil platforms sat on the seabed, but as exploration moved to deeper waters and more distant locations in the 1970s, floating production systems came to be used.
Oil produced from offshore production platforms can be transported to the mainland either by pipeline or by tanker.
When a tanker is chosen to transport the oil, it is necessary to accumulate oil in some form of storage tank such that the oil tanker is not continuously occupied during oil production, and is only needed once sufficient oil has been produced to fill the tanker. At this point the transport tanker connects to the stern of the storage unit and offloads oil ...
