Keokuk Junction Railway FP9 No. 1750 ambles westbound across S. Main Street through Smithfield, Illinois, on April 7, 2016, passing former Smithfield State Bank.
Although I got plenty of well lit sunny shots later on this was one of my favorites from the day. The Canadian Pacific F's clickity clack on jointed rail along the former Meridian & Bigbee at Jachin, AL at 6:48am on a cool summer morning in the deep south. There's not much in Jachin other than a woodchip mill, a post office and the railroad. CPKC train 42B is en route to the CSX interchange at Myrtlewood, AL and eventually Montgomery, AL for an inspection trip on Tuesday the 16th. CPKC and CSX have invested millions into the old M&B between Meridian, MS and Montgomery upgrading infrastructure.
On what would've been a perfect lit shot, the CP business train heads east out of Sedan with the classic F units on a gloomy morning. Of course, the sun would come out east of here at Murray, but I couldn't get ahead of the train in time for that.
Scooting past Slater Lake at the town of Slater along the KCS Mexico Sub is The Belle, operating as KCS train B-KCJV-26. Led by the FP9 A-B-A set, this train is giving shippers a ride of the Ex-Gateway Western from Kansas City, MO to the grain loop at Jacksonville, IL. 10/26/22.
The Royal Canadian Pacific luxury train rolls over Anderson Creek Bridge in British Columbia’s Fraser Canyon not long after departing the crew change point of Boston Bar on September 2, 2007. Powering the ten-car train of heavyweight passenger cars (except the baggage/power car) is FP9u No. 4106 and GP38-2 No. 3084.
With the customary FP9s for power, Pan Am's OCS knocks down the distant signal for CPF119 at Rice Rips Road on a chilly, but cloudless Monday morning. This was the trains second outing as a four car passenger train, and the lead car, former CSX sleeper Mississippi, has now been numbered to ST 41, and lettered as the George HW Bush (presumably as a tribute to the former president, and also to avoid any conflict with Pan Am flight 103).
Canadian Pacific's business train, led by a trio of F9s, crosses over the Mississippi River at Camden as the train begins its journey from St. Paul to Calgary.
Because the dome car on KCS's Southern Belle business train would not fit under the chutes at Bartlett Grain in Jacksonville, Ill. the train could not turn on the loop there. Instead, the F units ran around the loop and pulled the train backwards to Roodhouse, where everything was put back in proper order. This provided a rare chance to catch FP9 KCS 2 heading the train, seen heading down the Jacksonville - Murrayville branch.
VIA train #44 'Capital' is motoring along at Leeds, east of Gananoque, led by CN-liveried FP9 6518 and VIA-liveried FPB-4 6858; This train will split at Brockville. the first five cars going to Ottawa and the last four to Montreal.
VIA FP9 No. 6531 is panned as it speeds past the Brockville platform with an express bound for Montreal in June of 1981.
Not very happy with how this one came out, and I didn't put in any effort but I'll upload it anyways since you don't see this every day. CP's business train backing south to Albany, passing tower XO in Mechanicville, NY. Only one light on this one.
Pan Am's pocket sized OCS trundles through the woods and over Belgrade Stream as they deadhead towards Rigby yard in South Portland. Dark clouds loom overhead, but naturally a few minutes after this shot the sun would start to break through, and by the end of the day, it would be almost cloudless. A nice bit of color is visible on the opposite shore; this is probably as good as the foliage will get, as it has been a dry and warm summer.
Kansas City Southern's Holiday Express speeds across the wooden trestle at Crew Lake near Start, LA nearing its next stop at Monroe.
A mile or so north of Bellevue trestle on the morning of September 13, 1997 is ACR train 1. 1753 and 1752 lead the way on the all day jaunt to Hearst. I really liked this spot and shot it numerous times over the years. I posted a view with a longer lens of this same train a few months ago. Just had time to lower the 180mm and get the 50mm in position for this shot before the power was by me.
Pan Am's OCS trundles along through Belgrade on a gorgeous May morning, crossing its namesake stream on the small trestle nestled in the woods. The railroad only crosses Belgrade Stream once, but closely follows the lake it dumps into, Messalonskee Lake, and crosses the stream connecting the lake and the Kennebec River twice. Pan Am's pair of ex-CN FP9s lead their more recent dome car acquisition ST 102, as well as the old regulars on the train, ST 100 and ST 101.
During my time with the CP I made many trips to Montreal on No 41 for the day hanging out with a friend of mine who worked in the Power Bureau then located in Windsor Station. LBC would pick me up and we would hit the Glen where the passenger equipment was maintained always Angus Shops either coming or going to St Luc. I have never regretted the numerous roster shots I took there or on these trips. This is the only time that I ever remember seeing 2 FP-9's at St Luc
The Pan Am OCS crosses the Deerfield River after exiting the Hoosac Tunnel into daylight in Florida, MA The foliage was pretty close to peak at this point making for a great day chasing the OCS on the West End.
CP FP9 No. 1401 poses for photos over the pit at CP's St. Paul, Minn., diesel shop. Relco completed rehabilitation of this executive locomotive at its Albia, Iowa, shop, creating the world's most modern F unit, internally speaking. Externally, it's all those same graceful lines that make this line of EMDs the height of locomotive aesthetics.
WC/ACR train 2 makes its late evening arrival at Sault Ste. Marie in February 1998 with 1750 and 1753. Merry Christmas to everyone out there in flickr land!
A losing shot at Port Hope of the RCP going across the bridge as I got there in time to watch it go by, all hope wasn't lost. Putting all 260 turbocharged horses to use in the trusty Buick Verano, I made a bee line to Courtice to try again and with success. CP 41B rounds the bend with three FP9's galloping along doing 50 mph.
The springtime songs of the Red Winged Blackbirds are momentarily disrupted, as the Royal Canadian Pacific executive train banks the curve at Wood Rd and muscles out of the Reeseville Marsh basin just outside of Richwood. I tried for a better shot at Ixonia, but they were just too quick and Sunday morning traffic was just too slow...next time maybe.

The morning canyon train soars over Bellevue trestle with 1752, 1750 and 1753 on July 21, 1996. Powering the ACR passenger jobs with F-units was one of the cooler moves WC made.
PAR 1 and PAR 2 (née-CN FP9s) lead Pan Am Railway's Office Car Special east through Orange, MA. With Pan Am Railways is up for sale, this very well could have been the last run of the OCS.
WC train 3 is getting close to Searchmont on the morning of July 27, 1996. I had a lot better luck getting off work back in those days and I guess thats a good thing as there was a hell of a lot better things to shoot then than there is now:). AC 1755, 1756 and 1750 are running at track speed with a train load of tourists heading north to view Agawa Canyon.
I bagged this view of the Tilden empties train SOESA arriving at Escanaba with AC 1755 leading 6626. This train ran west from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont to Larch on the old SOO and then took the connection onto the old CNW for the trip to the Ore Yard. Here the power will be swapped and a pair of 6 axles taking the empties to Eagle Mills and return to Partridge and pick up the loads and bring them to Escanaba. By that time this crew should be rested and these units will depart for Sault Ste. Marie with the loads. While FP9's were common on these trains seeing them in the lead wasn't. I'd followed this guy all the way from Trout Lake trying to get him in the sun and only managed to at Larch and here as he pulled into the yard. May 17, 1997. Never did I expect to catch a covered wagon leading ore here or that some day I would not be able to shoot an ore train here.
Pan Am's spiffy looking OCS clatters over the Messalonskee Stream bridge in Waterville, about a minute away from entering the yard there. The pair of former CN FP9s are getting in their annual late summer tour of the railroad, hauling executives around the system, and showing off any improvements made since the last trip. With the departure of Pan Am's pair of heritage painted GP9s, PAR 1 and PAR 2 will be the only 567 powered engines left on the railroad, besides the SW1 007, used as a shop switcher in Waterville.
Strange visitor in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario as Algoma Central FP9's roll to get their morning passenger train and leased LS&I U30C helps out on the Wisconsin Central on March 9, 1996.
Canadian Pacific's business train had come down to Kansas City today from Nahant Yard in the Quad Cities, and after I saw where it was parked, I knew that I had to give a night photo a shot. The train was running today as the 40B, and the word on the street is that it will be continuing south on the KCS next week.
Canadian Pacific train 40B-20 at Homer. It was a beautiful fall day along the CP River sub.

OSR 1400 and OSR 1401 have just cleared Putnam and are on their way to St Thomas to serve the industries there.
CN's Sarnia - Toronto train #86 approaches Denfield Road, between Komoka and Hyde Park, led by GP9 4575 and FP9 6531. Evidently something has gone wrong with the 6531, and Sarnia has added a freight-geared Geep for power. 65 m.p.h. maximum speed will mean a late arrival in Toronto.
A rare FP9 leader has 6590 and 6619 and a 68 car mix of Ladysmith and Tilden ore as it makes its way east near Dafter. The entire existence of the WC was classic stuff but if I had to pick out one period of just unbelievable consists, I would have to choose the 1995-1998 years as a fantastic time to be track side in Upper Michigan. April 17, 1997. A rescan.
Usually spring time means flowers coming out, trees blooming, the days getting longer, and for Pan Am, generally the OCS comes out. The OCS is making it's first trip of the year as they roll out of Waterville at CPF113, past the Railroad Square nestled between Chaplin and Main St, and hundreds of dandelions. Westbounds can be tricky to shoot out of Waterville in the morning, as the old Maine Central runs due southwest in most spots, but some sidelight still looks good gleaming off the immaculate train.

Canadian National FP9 No. 6528 is a passenger-hauling locomotive built in 1957 by General Motors Diesel, a Canadian subsidiary of EMD. FP9s were essentially an F9 freight locomotive extended four feet to make room for a steam generator and water storage for passenger service.
CNR 6528 was photographed on Kodachrome by Roger Teskey, idling between assignments in Windsor, Ontario back in 1974.
In the late 1970s, 6528 ownership was transferred to VIA Rail Canada, and was among a group of FP9s extensively rebuilt by CN for VIA and re-designated an 1800 HP FP9ARM.
Today, 6528 is on display at Exporail, a Canadian Railway Museum in Saint-Constant, Quebec alongside former CN FP9, No. 6529.
Kansas City Southern's Holiday Express climbs the Huey P. Long bridge on the approach to the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge, LA. Thanks again to the Plant Man for convincing me to come out there!
On a bitterly cold January 18, 1997, Wisconsin Central LO35 whips through the snow between Ensign and Isabella west of Cooks, Michigan. The eastbound train is powered by Algoma Central EMD (GMD) FP9 Nos. 1754 and 1751, along with WC SDL39 No. 587. During this time over the winter months, when the ACRY’s Agawa Canyon tour train wasn’t operating, the F units assigned to the passenger train were frequently put to work on Wisconsin Central freights in the region.
I almost didn't get the shot here, but I made it right as the train came around the corner. Here CP 41B heads past a swamp near Glenwood only a couple miles into the Elbow Lake Sub. Had to photoshop a couple people out of the picture, no hard feelings.
CN FP9 6519 along with F9Bs 6617 and 6619 are in charge of the twelve cars forming Toronto - Windsor train #159. The location is the long gone trestle bridge where the Pulham Road crossing is today, east of Komoka.

CP's executives are getting a view of their recently repurchased line as business train CP 41B heads west on CP's Sherbrooke Sub with a 12-car train and an interesting lashup of CP 1401, CP 7019 & CP 1900.
The Kansas City Southern business special heads south through Poteau, OK on June 6, 2022. This particular running of the business train included five Canadian Pacific cars on the rear.
PAR 1 and PAR 2 lead Pan Am's Office Car Special at Otter River in Templeton, MA. The train is headed east on the District 3 Mainline. This was the last run of the OCS before it went silent once CSX made moves into taking over Pan Am.

After setting off two string of cars on two tracks, F-units CP 1401, CP 4107, CP 1900 & CP 4106 are leaving Ottawa Station with nine cars just before the CP 150 show begins. That part of the train will lay over at nearby Walkley Yard until the show ends, presumably there was not enough room for the whole train to stay at the station the entire afternoon.
