Red Fox in Winter Wonderland
I think the combination of red fox fur and pristine snow white will always have my preference ;)
I ordered this fox mask kit for Halloween last month and it took me waaaay longer than expected to put it together, but it came out really nice! I initially purchased it for use in light painting and I finally got to shoot with it last week while on a hunting trip in Wyoming. My friend WestR kindly modeled for me while I lit the scene! It was a fun time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I created the design in the background using Adobe Illustrator and loaded the bitmap image onto my Magilight to display in this light painting photo. The process for this photo began with me using a strobe to illuminate WestR in the mask, then I grabbed my Magilight and rotated it while displaying my design behind him. After that, I carefully adjusted my manual lens from f/11 to f/1.4 to expose the background for 10 seconds. The wide aperture also gave the background a nice soft blur for some good depth of field.

I really love shooting at this ranch and I’m thankful to be able to do it once a year. It’s a fun challenge trying to find new compositions and ideas.

I spotted a wild fox in the yard last night. It wasn’t like any other fox I’ve seen. It was almost glowing in the dark, it looked like it was on fire with blaze orange and yellow textures in its fur. It was a beautiful sight.
I created this light painting image in one long exposure photo. It is not a composite photo or digitally-manipulated double exposure. I used two tripods, EL wire, and a hand-made stencil placed over plexiglass.
I began the process by exposing the trees with my flashlight, then capped the lens, adjusted the focus and moved to my second pre-positioned tripod. I removed the lens cap and turned on my orange and yellow EL wire behind my light stencil Bounced it around for about 15 seconds and then stopped the exposure. It took quite some time to get the two subjects aligned and exposed properly.
All in all, I spent quite a while creating this shot. It was a fun project. From the sketching to the cutting out of the stencil, to painting and preparing the stencil and finally, the actual light painting, which in itself took nearly 2 hours (I was a bit rusty with double expos 😅). I really enjoyed putting this together as it combined my passions of graphic design, light painting photography and foxes. This is my first in a new series of typographic light stencils. Back to the sketchbook! 🔦

These are only a few of the wonderful and sweet foxes made by talented people I´ve found here. Is it necessary to say: I love foxes?!
As I had some trouble with the mosaic maker I had to put in the links to the artists myself - which had been hard work :-( Hope this was only a problem today ...

A red fox emerges from behind the gnarled, mossy trunk an old oak tree in a dense misty forest.
Foxes make for good artwork. They come off as one of those animals that are symbolic of wildlife in temperate areas. They also have a great deal of cultural symbolism often reprenting cleverness and trickery. From a compositional standpoint, their red and orange coats contrast well with natural backgrounds and draw the eye of the viewer.
I've done some fox themed artwork before, but it has been a while. So, I decided to try a new one.

This pattern was created as I was testing a pattern making technique, so I thought it would be a bit of a mess at first. But drawing the foxes became quite hypnotising, it was like putting together puzzle, and before I knew it there were foxes swirling around everywhere!

In the deep woods, a red fox stands on the shores of a pond. So thick are the trees that the only a few rays of light penetrate the canopy to reach the forest floor. A couple of these highlight the face of the elusive trickster as he looks up from the water to stare back at you.
I've always thought that foxes are a nice subject for art as their fur color contrasts nicely with the greenery of their environment. I've made a few images before featuring foxes, but this is the first to feature a new model which is specially designed to use rendered fur (rather than fur painted in post production). So far, I rather like it.

In this impressionist artwork a red fox stands on the banks of a stream looking down into the water on an autumn day. Poking its head out of the water looking back at him is a large turtle.
Foxes generally give me a lot of trouble in art. For some reason, about 90% just don't turn out well and I wind up deleting them. This one was an image I originally created as a detailed render, but I though that the elements of the scene just didn't work together well, but it wasn't so bad that I would throw it out. So I kept it in a folder of unpublished works. A few years later, while working with Topaz Impression 2, I decided to see how this would look if I coverted it into an impressionist painting. The result was a scene that I thought looked like a much more vibrant and cohesive work of art.
