FAO is providing assistance to the Fouta Djallon Highlands Integrated Natural Resources Management Project, which involves the governments of Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
The highlands are the point of origin of a number of transboundary rivers in West Africa, notably the Gambia, Niger and Senegal rivers, and support a rich variety of ecosystems.
But the area is under serious threat of degradation, resulting in accelerated reduction of vegetative cover; soil erosion, reduction of soil fertility, loss of biodiversity and increase in water run-off, siltation and sedimentation of watercourses as well as drying up of springs.
FAO is working with governments to improve natural resources management and livelihoods in the area in a number of pilot sites.

FAO is providing technical assistance to teach farmers how to use oxen to plough land, which they were previously doing by hand. Using the oxen allows them to prepare larger areas of land to grow crops.
