BATANGAS CITY MAY 4, 2016 - Thousands of people from different sectarian and religious groups march around Batangas City to protest coal. Around 8 proposed coal-fire power plants are set to be constructed around the province, countering the Philippines' climate initiative of reducing carbon emissions as part of the COP21 agreement.
Break Free 2016 is a week of coordinated direct actions that target the most dangerous fossil fuel projects, in an effort to keep coal, oil and gas in the ground and accelerate a just transition to 100% renewable energy. Thousands of people all over the planet are putting their bodies on the line to send a message to polluters and politicians that we need to break free from fossil fuels now.

As roughly 9,000 people jogged along Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue, Greenpeace activists, dressed as Chase’s high-profile CEO, ran the race as well. But, these Jamie Dimon look-a-likes ran in reverse, with messages on their backs so that as runner passed they learned about Chase’s backwards stance on energy investing. After the race, Greenpeace activists offered refreshing, clean water to thirsty participants, letting them know it’s only a matter of time until the pipelines financed by Chase leak, and when they do, it could threaten our drinking water.

The Greenpeace Thermal Airship A.E. Bates takes to the skies over San Francisco with a message for Governor Jerry Brown. The flight message was urging him to use the California Climate Summit to make a meaningful commitment to phase out fossil fuel development.

The annual shareholder meeting in Texas is the perfect opportunity to hold the company accountable for its harmful endeavor of an oil state and oil diplomacy.

A home burns in Pine Canyon during the Lake Fire on August 12, 2020 in Lake Hughes, California. The wildfire exploded to at least 10,000 acres in the first few hours with no containment and destroying several homes and out buildings in Pine Canyon.
The Climate emergency is exacerbating the conditions that make fires more catastrophic. Hotter and drier conditions are extending the wildfire season and contributing to larger fires.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, unhealthy air is a serious public health emergency. Deadly air pollutants are exacerbated by dangerous smoke from these fires that threaten children, elderly populations, pregnant women, unhoused people, outdoor workers, and those with compromised immune systems and preexisting conditions.

LUSATIA, GERMANY-- May 13, 2016, Over 2000 people walked onto a giant coal mine, one of the largest polluters in Europe, to say that it's time we stop carving up our earth for our energy needs. Organizers will be camped out at the mine for as long as possible to make sure politicians and corporations know that it's time to #breakfree from fossil fuels.

Gary tells the story: In the 1830s, the United States government forced the people of the Choctaw Nation to leave their homeland in the area of Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana, and to walk 500 miles to Indian territory, which later became Oklahoma. These people suffered from starvation, cold, and lack of promised provisions. Many died along the way. Yet, in 1847, when a call went out to help people starving during Ireland's Potato Famine, the Choctaw responded, and sent all they could collect from their meager earnings.

An estimated 210,000 gallons of oil leaked from the Keystone Pipeline in Marshall County, South Dakota, according to the pipeline's operator, TransCanada. Crews shut down the pipeline and officials are investigating the cause of the leak. Equipment is staged to work on containing and fixing the leak.
