People watch and participate as the second California based Fire Drill Friday takes place in the District 15 area of Los Angeles. The area is home to the massive oil and gas fields that are quite literally poisoning and killing people. Speakers include: Gloria Arellanes, a member of the Gabrieleno/Tongva Tribe; Jocelyn Moguel, a strong young leader born and raised in Wilmington, CA.; Doctor Saba Malik, a second year family medicine resident at Harbor UCLA Medical Center; Jovan Houston, an aviation service worker at Los Angeles International Airport and rank and file leader SEIU United Service Workers West; Magali Sanchez-Hall is a long-time resident of Wilmington and an environmental justice activist working alongside environmental justice organizations.

Helping with speaker introductions are: Billie Lee; Lana Parrilla; Sam Waterston; Josh Pence; Rosanna Arquette; Diane Lane; Saffron Burrows; and Lily Tomlin.

NETL’s Polymer Synthesis Laboratory provides innovative advancements to the materials necessary for affordable carbon capture and sequestration technology, a critical component in efforts to combat climate change. The lab performs chemical synthesis, purification, and analysis of chemical compounds to identify candidate materials that can be used for carbon capture and sequestration.

On May 31st New Yorkers from across the city are going to be descending on the Clean Energy Standard hearing in lower Manhattan to help spark a renewable energy revolution in the Empire State. We need you there with us for our climate, our economy, and the city we love. This is the big one.

Leco CS744 - Oxygen/Nitrogen by Inert Gas Fusion Infrared and Thermal Conductivity Detection

 

The Leco CS744 is designed for routine measurement of carbon and sulfur in primary steels, ores, finished metals, and other inorganic materials. Additional features—such as a high-frequency combustion furnace, improved IR cell design, rugged design, and available automation assists in acquiring an accurate analysis of carbon and/or sulfur.

Trace amounts of carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen can make a big difference in the structure and properties of many alloys. Combustion analysis can be used to measure the concentration of carbon and sulfur in a number of different ores and metals. A small amount of the sample is first combusted in oxygen. The amount of carbon

dioxide and sulfur dioxide produced from the reaction is then measured with an infrared detector.

 

A similar approach is applied to measure the amount of nitrogen and oxygen present in each sample. The sample is placed inside a graphite crucible and heated rapidly. Oxygen present in the molten sample reacts readily with the graphite crucible, and the amount of carbon dioxide formed from the combustion reaction is measured with an infrared detector and used to calculate the amount of oxygen originally present in the sample. Nitrogen gas escaping from the molten sample is measured with a separate thermal conductivity detector, as it is invisible to the infrared detector.

 

By measuring the composition of alloys down to parts-per-million levels, it is possible to work out how changes to ingredients and processing conditions affect their composition.

Demolition continues on the Crawford Coal Power Plant in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. It was closed in 2012 after a long battle with community activists. It was owned by Midwest Generation, a subsidiary of Edison International. Demolition of the plant began in 2019. On April 11, 2020, the concrete smokestack was imploded and created a large dust cloud that covered the surrounding neighborhood.

As roughly 9,000 people jogged along Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue, Greenpeace activists, dressed as Chase’s high-profile CEO, ran the race as well. But, these Jamie Dimon look-a-likes ran in reverse, with messages on their backs so that as runner passed they learned about Chase’s backwards stance on energy investing. After the race, Greenpeace activists offered refreshing, clean water to thirsty participants, letting them know it’s only a matter of time until the pipelines financed by Chase leak, and when they do, it could threaten our drinking water.

Today, the most promising geologic formations under consideration for CO2 storage are active and depleted oil and gas formations, deep saline formations, and deep, unmineable coal seams. To better understand these formations, researchers at the High-Pressure Immersion and Reactive Transport Laboratory in Albany are studying subsurface systems.

NETL’s Severe Environment Corrosion Erosion Facility in Albany studies how new and old materials will stand up to new operating conditions.

 

Work done in the lab supports NETL’s oxy-fuel combustion oxidation work, refractory materials stability work, and the fuels program, in particular the hydrogen membrane materials stability work, to determine how best to upgrade existing power plants.

Another very wet day today with rain & sleet. So I thought I'd upload a few pics taken last year at the Coal Mining Museum, Caphouse.

 

These showers remain intact, you can imagine the camerarderie of the miners as they tried to wash away the coal dust and blackened faces.

Actress and director Bonnie Wright (L) joined Greenpeace USA activists including Kate Melges at Coca-Cola headquarters and does a live Facebook post after delivering the message accepted by Coca-Cola that more than 585,000 people want the company to abandon single-use plastics.Greenpeace launched a global campaign spanning five continents on Coke in 2017. Greenpeace is urging the company to phase out throwaway plastic, introduce reusable containers and innovative delivery systems, and ensure that all remaining packaging is 100 percent recycled.
