Fossil leaves tell us that the lake that existed here during the Eocene was nestled among mountains in a lush forest with broadleaf trees and palms along the shores and spruce and fir on the cool upper mountain slopes.
This large fossil, some sort of cephalopod (primitive coiled mollusk) was found at Cave Ridge Vineyard in Shenandoah Valley Virginia when they were digging up the land to plant grapes. A drawing of it is featured on the label of one of their wines, I believe the Fossil Hill Reserve. If you happen to stop by the vineyard for a tasting, ask about the fossil and the nice folks may bring it out for you to look at.
Note: The fossilized tooth in the photo is actually a reproduction, if you look closely you can see the mold marks on the side.
The beautiful end destination of the Dixon Lewis Trail (Waterfall Trail), which is approximately one mile from the trailhead (two miles roundtrip). More information about how to access Fossil Creek and gaining a permit can be found at www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/coconino/recarea/?recid=75356. Video taken May 7, 2024 by Brady Smith. A really cool zoo! Bring the family and a picnic lunch, the parking area wraps around park land with tables and benches - entrance to the zoo not required. Also has separate access to amusement park rides. Great set-up.

Fossil Springs begin approximately three quarters of a mile above the old Fossil Creek Dam. A series of springs gush 20,000 gallons a minute year-round at the bottom of a 1,600 foot deep canyon, creating a lush riparian oasis rich with life, and feeding Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River. Over the years these calcium laden waters have laid down huge deposits of a type of limestone called travertine, creating deep pools for miles along the creek. The Wilderness and surrounding area are on the Tonto and Coconino National Forests, and are managed by the Coconino National Forest.
During the spring-summer season, camping is prohibited in Fossil Springs Wilderness and the surrounding area, and a reserved parking permit is required to park at the trailheads that access the Wilderness.
