With a population of about 450 people, Fossil is one of many isolated small towns dotting the eastern 3/4th of the State of Oregon. It is the county seat of very sparsely populated Wheeler County in north central Oregon. It sits at the junction of Oregon State Routes 19 (north-southeast) and 218 (coming in from the southwest). It is named after the fossils the first postmaster found on his ranch north of the current site of the town in 1876 when he established the first post office at his ranch. In 1881 it was decided to move the post office to the present site of Fossil and the town's first store was built.

Fossil discoveries, friendships with Oglala Lakota and Northern Cheyenne and early day ranching are some of the history that is preserved at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

Wales’s oldest fossil animals – are they 570 million year old jellyfish or bases of sea pens? This is a question we posted on Twitter for #fossilfriday

Although they have previously assumed to be Jellyfish the generally consensus now is they are the bases of sea pen-like animals.

This fossil shell and fish skeletons suggest the mysterious life that swam through the world's oceans long ago. A sea fan makes up part of the background texture.

Fossil Fish (with teeth)

Lebanon - Middle Cretaceous

This picture doesn't do it justice. The teeth have incredible detail. This is my favorite in my collection.

Fossil encrusted rock.

I found this fossill on a local beach. I have no idea of what the creatures were or how old they could be but there are dozens of them trapped in this layer of rock.

This rock is about the size of a large hand and the shells are rough to touch as the sea has battered and eroded the surface
