The fossilized tooth of an ancient giant shark (Carcharodon or Otodus species) from my collection, still retaining some of the darker grey limestone matrix it was found in. It's likely early Cenozoic Era in age, around 50 million years old, from either the Eocene or Oligocene period. It was most likely collected in Morocco. This creature was up to 50 feet long, and is a relative of today's Great White Shark. Carcharodon carcharius (a "tiny" 20 feet long!).

The brachiopods, also known as arm gills, are members of an animal phylum consisting exclusively of bilaterally symmetrical marine animals with a two-lobed shell. They feed on microorganisms and are externally similar to mussels (Bivalvia), but instead of a left and right shell (valve) they have an upper and a lower shell, whereby the ventral shell is usually larger than the dorsal shell. Brachiopods also have a stalk for clinging and arm-shaped tentacles on both sides of the mouth. The largest species living today reach shell widths of up to seven centimetres, the largest fossil shells are around 30 centimetres wide.

I am lucky as I found a bit of Icthyour vertebrae at Whitby. Not as good as this fossil though. No idea of type or age of this specimen, or where it came from. It is a UK specimen. Icthyosaurs were marine reptiles which gave birth to live young. They had a good innings from the Early Triassic to the mid Cretaceous.

I never knew how easy it was to find fossils at the local beach - ok, they don’t look spectacular, no dinosaurs or sharks teeth, but they’re much older (Carboniferous) and it’s fascinating to learn about them.

This is how fossils are born. Add organic matter cover it in mud and wait for a few million years and viola you have a fossil. The patterns in the dried mud are caused by freezing temperatures while the mud was still wet then when the sun comes up the ice melts leaving these patterns.

After months of stay-at-home, we planned the safest outing we could think of, a self-guided tour of Fossil Rim Wildlife center. This audad posing for my camera was a highlight of the trip!

Found in West Virginia!!! Proof that this place was covered by the ocean. My husband found this while working out in the field sampling water at a coal mine. He was in the area of Dorothy WV.

On yesterday's post flic.kr/p/2mW85s8 Michael mirrored my difficulty in comprehending vast eons of time and asked the question what does 66 million years actually mean?

The geology of the Jurassic Coast is extremely complicated and I don't begin to really understand it. However, the shortest version can be seen in this photo. All land here is the remains of an ancient Jurassic sea. It is made up of layers of sediment laid down in an ocean up to around 195 million years ago. However, unlike many places along the coast, here in this photo the layers are more or less horizontal. That means the oldest at the bottom and the most recent at the top.

How does that relate to yesterday's post. Basically as a relatively 'young' fossil, it will have come down from the higher layers of the cliff. This whole coast is constantly eroded, as can be clearly be seen above. High tides cut from below whilst rain run-off erodes from above. Small cliff falls happen daily. Large falls happen every few months and massive slumps every few years. Each time fossils deposited millions and millions of years ago are washed out of the cliffs. They are then either lost to the sea or found by collectors.

Cretaceous echinoid fossil, island of Rügen, Germany. Stack of five images, shot with a Nikon Z fc with a Nikkor Z MC 50 mm 1:2.8, auto focus, aperture 29, exposure time 1.3 s, and ISO 400. Size of the fossil is about 3 cm.

This remarkable sandstone promontory lay beneath the sea during the Oligocene geological period (about 38 million years ago) and contains millions of fossils. One of Australia's oldest fossil marsupials (the possum-like Wynyardia bassiana) was discovered here in the mid 19th Century and is estimated to be approximately 25 million years old.

Fossil in the making. Just cover with mud or silt and wait a few million years.

Fossil Stingray (Asterotrygon maloneyi). This creature lived during Eocene time, about 50 million years ago. This fossil is preserved in the Green River Formation, a laminated limestone precipitated from calcium-rich waters. The limestone is interbedded with many thin layers of volcanic ash and mudstone. Fossil Butte National Monument. Lincoln Co., Wyo.

The Fossil Falls is a unique geological feature, located in the Coso Range of California in the United States. Volcanic activity in the mountain range, along with meltwater from glaciers in the nearby Sierra Nevada, played a role in the creation of the falls. They are located near Little Lake, Inyo County, California, 1.0 mi (1.6 km) off US 395 (at a red cinder cone called "Red Hill") on Cinder Road

Fossil of an ammonite (a group of extinct marine molluscs) from the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico. According to some papers I read, the deposit dates from the lower Jurassic period. Back then, the region was under the sea. Processed in Darktable.

Brittle Sea Star (Geocoma carinata). Dorsal surface. This specimen, preserved in limestone, is from the upper Jurassic Solnhofen Formation. It is about 146 million years old. Intact fossils of ophiuroids are quite rare because the fragile body parts disarticulate quickly after death. This brittle star is remarkably similar to its modern counterparts. The specimen shown here is about 4 cm wide. Zandt Quarry. Zandt, Solnhofen, Bavaria, Germany.

Can't decide if I like smooth or rough...this all started with trying out ideas for an ammonite cane, then ran across a button I used for a mold a LONG time ago; thought, hmmm....how a bout a fossil slice embedded in a rock....

Fossil Dance Fly (Empiidae fam.) preserved in the Upper Eocene Florissant Formation about 34 million years ago. Specimens of these dance flies are occasionally mistaken for mosquitos, probably because of the prominent proboscis. There are no documented occurances of mosquitos in the Florissant Formation. - www.kevin-palmer.com - It was a beautiful spring afternoon at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. This is the Fossil Hills Trail which winds up and around University and Carnegie Hills.

In October 1981, flying tiger ancient human remains from Guizhou Provincial Museum trial excavation, the accumulation of complex, broadly divided into early and late phases. Early formation of yellow or grayish yellow, unearthed panda, Stegodon fossils, stone products are made for the late Paleolithic culture era. Advanced formation is black, black, unearthed animal genetic pulp for extant species, and human mandibular and chipped stone, grinding stone, grinding bone, pottery and other large, geological time for the Holocene, culture in the age of the Neolithic age, that about 4000 years ago to 6000 years.

Unearthed stone products made a total of 532 pieces of raw materials, mainly to flint stone, there is, nuclear, stone etc.. The stone to stone, with the forward direction of processing processing, types of hit device, a scraper, tip like device and dolabriform etc.. The scraper accounted for 76%, tip like device is small but fine processing. The axe is a symbol of the transformation of Neolithic culture. 27 pieces of polished stone, delicate process, a stone axe, stone adzes, stone spinning wheels, stone scraper, stone arrow head, small stones (spear) 8. The number of stone adzes, regular shape, with long oblique cutting tool representative. 79 pieces of bone, in addition to the 1 pieces of grinding residual bone scraper, are making bone, bone and bone shovel cone. The three notches in the teeth may be scratching the porcupine symbol. In addition to pottery and ball spinning round round cake 1, the rest are all pieces of artifacts. 1494 tablets. The uneven thickness, thickness of 1.2 cm, thickness of only 0.2 cm, high temperature, hard texture. About 70% of sand pottery, pottery sand shale pottery class accounted for 30%, very little. Sand and sand are mainly sand. Pottery ornamentation is complicated, there are thick rope lines and Fang Gewen cone, tattoo, carved lines and lines and other additional cone. There are 3 pieces of pottery pottery, which has 1 pieces of orange powder is subjected to pottery coating inside and outside the grey clay, on the exterior is painted with two parallel red bands. This is the first time in Guizhou, Guizhou is also the earliest pottery record.

The site has a new and old stone formation, and the cultural connotation is rich. Pottery appear more attractive, but considerable differences in advanced culture. These have great significance to the study of the relationship between the new and the old stone culture in Guizhou and the time continuity of the times.

In February 23, 1982, the Guizhou Provincial People's Government approved the publication of the provincial cultural relics protection units.
