I struggled to get a shot out of this beautiful fossil, which I wanted to see in context. I started pout with a wideangle but switched to telephoto, but it misses the mark for me.

Fossil Winged Fruit (Chaneya tenuis). Although this specimen resembles a flower, it is actually an unusual winged fruit. Precise systematic placement of the fossil genus is uncertain. This rare example of a flower-like winged fruit has been placed provisionally in the family Simaroubaceae (Soapberry). This genus is characterized by 5 sepals and a dark globular fruit body in the center. This specimen is from the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation. The unit is of Eocene age, about 45 million years old. Size of the specimen is 10 mm. Douglas Pass, Garfield Co., Colo.

picked this Ammonite (3.5 - 4" diameter) up at a fossil and mineral shop in Madrid, NM, on the old highway between Santa Fe and Albuquerque (State Hwy. 14N -- The Turquoise Trail). I love the labyrinthian nature of sacred geometry, and the fractalian properties found in the more-than-human world.

Fossil Springs begin approximately three quarters of a mile above the old Fossil Creek Dam. A series of springs gush 20,000 gallons a minute year-round at the bottom of a 1,600 foot deep canyon, creating a lush riparian oasis rich with life, and feeding Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River. Over the years these calcium laden waters have laid down huge deposits of a type of limestone called travertine, creating deep pools for miles along the creek. The Wilderness and surrounding area are on the Tonto and Coconino National Forests, and are managed by the Coconino National Forest.

During the spring-summer season, camping is prohibited in Fossil Springs Wilderness and the surrounding area, and a reserved parking permit is required to park at the trailheads that access the Wilderness. See Fossil Springs Wilderness and Fossil Creek on the USFS Coconino National Forest website for maps, regulations, permit reservations, and other details.

Itinerant Dinosaur Exhibition which took place in September 2015 in Torrejon de Ardoz (Madrid, Spain). Besides the many life-size dinosaur replicas (some of them animatronic, even offered as rides for young children) it also featured a prehistoric tour showing the way of life of Neanderthals, an assorted fossil collection and a hosted multimedia show. All in all, very worthwhile as an educational event and extremely enjoyable to children and parents alike.

Taken handheld with my Panasonic Lumix TZ7 (ZS3) in very scarce and rapidly changing available light, which made using the small built-in flash mandatory as well as selecting ISO 200/400 in all shots for increased flash range to cater for the very large subjects.

Fossil Sweet Fern (Comptonia sp.). These plants lived during Eocene time, about 50 million years ago. This fossil is preserved in the Green River Formation, a laminated limestone precipitated from calcium-rich waters. The limestone is interbedded with many thin layers of volcanic ash and mudstone. Fossil Creek seems to appear out of nowhere, gushing 20,000 gallons a minute out of a series of springs at the bottom of a 1,600 foot deep canyon. Over the years these calcium laden waters have laid down huge deposits of a type of limestone called travertine. That rock-like substance encases whatever happens to fall into the streambed, forming the fossils for which the area is named. Fossil Creek is one of two "Wild and Scenic" rivers in Arizona. This special designation was achieved when the Irving power plant was decommissioned, and removal of flume and dam on the creek allowed this magnificent creek to once again flow freely through Arizona's arid landscape.

Most people come to Fossil Creek to sunbathe, wade, hike and birdwatch. It's also a great place to take photographs. The lushness of the riparian area strikes a sharp contrast to the brittle desert that surrounds it. Increasing popularity has led to the Coconino and Tonto National Forests to implement a parking permit reservation system in 2016. Reserved parking permits give visitors the peace of mind knowing they'll have a spot waiting for them in this remote location. Many visitors drive two or three hours to get to the creek. The final descent to the creek at the bottom of a canyon is on an extremely rough, rocky jeep road.

It is our Ruby Wedding Anniversary On the 26th March and Mick took us here on a fossil hunt. We found several species of Brachiopods, some Coral, Crinoid ossicles and Bryozoans. These rocks are about 420 Million years old.

Several fossil photos to come over the next couple of days. Sadly no Trilobite bits.

I went on a Geology field trip to Wenlock Edge circa 1980 with the best teacher I ever had (Dave Sixsmith) The very first time I had been fossil hunting, it left me with a lifelong interest in Geology.

Any idea what these are called?

Maybe a coral? Gladys lived in Kentucky

at one point. Maybe that's a clue.

A selection of fossils that l have found in my local area in recent years They are all from the Mesozoic period which can be dated 65 to 248 million years ago. Where l found these there must of been a sea. These examples show how diverse life was in the sea at that time

I found these fossil leaves near Clearfield, Pennsylvania in 2006. They are from the Pennsylvanian (Upper Carboniferous) period -- 286 to 325 million years old.

I got two more fossils.....my obsession with suture patterns continues.

Fossil Fish (Phareodus testis) in the Green River Formation. These fish flourished during Eocene time, about 50 million years ago, in three vast freshwater lakes. This species grew as large as 15 inches and fed upon smaller fish in the lakes. They are distant relatives of the modern arowana, or bony tongue, a freshwater fish found in tropical regions. This a view of the beach at my feet along the James. Most of these fossil scallop shells are 3-4 inches across. Chesapecten jeffersonius 'Jefferson's Chesapeake Scallop' is found along the James River in Virginia. These ancient scallops died out about four million years ago during Pleistocene Epoch (the "Ice Age").

Fossils enclosed in marble + colored fruit rests

This impressive fossil was discovered in 2003 by local fisherman Nick Collard whilst fishing in the Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve. The plesiosaur had swam in the local seas 185 million years ago during the Jurassic era. It is rare to find such a complete skeleton and permission was granted to excavate it. It is currently on show in the Museum of Somerset in Taunton.

Fossil Beetle (Buprestidae fam.) in the Green River Formation. This beetle, now extinct, is similar to modern jewel beetles. This specimen lived during Eocene time, about 50 million years ago.
