TAKE TWO TERABYTES AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING: DATA’S GROWING ROLE IN THE MEDICAL TOOL BOX

At the core of precision medicine is precision: the critical need to hit, square on, a moving target in a body chock full of moving targets. To keep the aim sound, we need more than a steady hand, we need data. Smart data, and lots of it. That imperative has driven much of the innovation—and investment—in the current digital health transformation. Entrepreneurs and corporate leaders are now championing the role of big data in everything from drug development to predictive analytics in cancer diagnosis to hospital systems management—and putting billions of dollars behind these efforts. Do the numbers add up, or is the promise of big data yet another false medical miracle?

THE NEXT ENDANGERED SPECIES: THE DOCTOR

Lost in the conversation of the digital health revolution is the focus on humans that often drive transformation in healthcare and that’s the medical doctor. We’ve seen doctors increasingly demoralized, depressed, and under pressure to meet mounting administrative loads while maintaining impeccable, patient-rated “healthgrades” online. The epidemic of burnout now affects almost two-thirds of America’s physicians according to a recent Medscape study. They’re frustrated by the payment systems and being pushed out by large health systems that imagine others doing their work and stripping them of authority. They spend less and less time with patients, and there’s giddy talk about how soon robots—already active in surgery and radiology—will do it all. Do we really want to imagine a world without doctors?

Happy holidays folks!

[*** This is NOT a picture taken by me, I just found it googl'ing around :) ]

This Fortuner is parked at a bank in Kingston, Jamaica. The Fortuner is one of Toyota's three IMV project vehicles, the other two being the Innova MPV and the Hilux pickup. These three vehicles are almost all assembled in Southeast Asia, except the Hilux-90% of those also come from Thai or Phillipine factories, but a handful are built in Argentina and South Africa too.

The Hilux is sold just about everywhere except for Canada and the US, and is the most common of these three cars worldwide(the other two are actually that truck's "little brothers" so to speak, since both were developed using the Hilux pickup as the starting point). The Innova is moved primarily in Southeast Asia, and can also be found in some parts of the Middle East(it isn't offered anywhere else).

The Fortuner's main market is also primarily Southeast Asian (you can't buy one in Europe, Japan or North America), though it is spread more broadly than the Innova, proliferating in the Caribbean, Southern Africa and many parts of the Middle East.

Saved from the storm fortune the beached porpoise well on the way to recovery in the safe haven of beaucette yacht marina Guernsey

The first generation of the Toyota Fortuner was built from 2004 until 2015. It was developed in Thailand and sold mainly in Asian and South American markets. Over here it's very rare with only six registered. The Fortuner is based on the platform of the Hilux. This one is powered by a 4.0 litre V6 engine with 235 PS.

CYBERSECURITY: PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR CEOs

These days, a hacker attack can start and end in a matter of minutes, often before your company has any idea it happened in the first place. These attacks, however, can have long-lasting effects. Every company needs the best possible cybersecurity incident response team, but it also needs the best possible preventive system to stop an attack before it starts. What’s the latest and how does your company need to prepare for the when, not the if?

I've been saving almost every fortune I've gotten for several years now. I had no idea I ate Chinese food that frequently. Here's what they say (duplicates removed):

Art is your fate. Don't debate.

Now is the time to try something new.

Simplicity of character is the natural result of profound thought.

You will be traveling and coming into a fortune.

You will never regret the present, you live life to the fullest.

You are tasting the sweets of success.

Your happiness is intertwined with your outlook on life.

Sweet memories are the paradise of the mind.

Many receive advice, only the wise profit by it.

Listen not to vain words of empty tongue.

You have a deep appreciation of the arts and music.

May life throw you a pleasant curve.

Once every day, speak a few reasonable words.

Good health will be yours for a long time.

You display the wonderful trait of charm and courtesy.

Soon you will get the recognition you deserve.

You will do well to expand your business.

A golden egg of opportunity falls into your lap this month.

A tentative life is full of regrets.

You long to see the great pyramids in Egypt.

Keep your feet on the ground even though friends flatter you.

You are faithful in the execution of any public trust.

Watch your relations with other people carefully, be reserved.

Get your mind set.... Confidence will lead you on.

You are capable, competent, creative, careful. Prove it.

You have a deep interest in all that is artistic.

Adventure can be real happiness.

Your luck has been completely changed today.

Friends long absent are coming back to you.

You are offered the dream of a lifetime. Say yes!

It is much easier to be critical than to be correct.

You will conquer obstacles to acheive success.

Make serious decisions in the last few days of the month.

To be a man means constant revision like correcting a writing.

You will move to a wonderful new home within the year.

There is a prospect of a thrilling time ahead for you.

Life to you is a dashing and bold adventure.

You have the rare ability to recognize ability in others.

A heavy burden is lifted with a phone message or letter.

The important thing is to express yourself.

More money and travel is in your future.

You acheive great peace of mind when you talk with an old friend.

Your love life will be happy and harmonious.

Your planning will bring rich rewards.

People say you have sharp sense and superb intellect.

You are original and creative.

You will make some changes before winning.

The star of riches is shining upon you.

Ignorance never settles a question.

Try to channel excess energies into rejuvenation.

Take care and sensitivity you show towards others will return to you.

Don't be over self-confident with your first impression of others.

You will be spending time outdoors, in the mountains, near water.

You have an unusually magnetic personality.

Nothing in the world is accomplished without passion.

There is a prospect of a thrilling time ahead of you.

If you can shape it in your mind, you will find it in your life.

Everyone has the right to choose one's own lifestyle.

Stuff happens. It is your response that counts.

All things have an end.

Someone is speaking well of you.

Be most affectionate today.

If I bring forth what is inside me, what I bring forth will save me.

Your love of life will carry you through any circumstance.

You need a new environment. Go on vacation.

Prejudice is the child of ignorance.

Good things are being said about you.

You are talented in many ways.

You will be unusually successful in business.

You are soon going to change your present line of work.

A woman who seeks to be equal with men lacks ambition. Ouch!

Good news; Your financial future will soon be given a new opportunity. Act on it.

You are never selfish with your advice or your help.

Welcome each day as a fresh new beginning.

An unglazed or biscuit porcelain statue created by Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory in 1900. She is based on the statue by sculptor Augustin Jean Moreau-Vajthier (1878).

Many works of art starting from the 1860s were re-made as smaller versions and/or limited reproductions to make the art more affordable to the public. While many full-sized statues could only be purchased by the very rich or privileged, smaller reproductions like this made it somewhat affordable to have works of art in the home.

My photo of Hiram Powers' "Greek Slave" was created for a similar purpose.

The other night at dinner- Chinese, obviously- I cracked open my fortune cookie... And what fell out was not so much a "fortune" as it was "Copyright Infringement". Weird.

I love the different types of light in this scene.

WHO’S THE BOSS?

In the digital health revolution, the patient is supposed to be king. But in a world where this consumer doesn’t pay for much of his or her care, isn’t confident about his or her knowledge of the marketplace, and doesn’t have that much choice anyway, can he or she really be in charge? (If the answer is no, how do we change this paradigm?)
