Ando's famous church in Osaka is an essay in concrete and light, nestled in a fairly typical residential neighbourhood.

"In all my works, light is an important controlling factor," says Ando. "I create enclosed spaces mainly by means of thick concrete walls. The primary reason is to create a place for the individual, a zone for oneself within society. When the external factors of a city's environment require the wall to be without openings, the interior must be especially full and satisfying... Walls are the most basic elements of architecture, but they can also be the most enriching."

"A smooth surface was achieved by adopting a dense engineering quality mix with a slump less than 15cm (6in) and by ensuring thorough vibration with a minimum cover for the reinforcing bars of 5cm (2in) to avoid weathering problems and staining. The density of the concrete results in a glass-like surface that registers the different qualities of light, and tends to dematerialize it. Because Ando's concrete is so precisely wrought, so smooth and reflective, it produces an illusion of a taut, textile surface rather than presenting it as a heavy earthbound mass. Ando has his own teams of expert carpenters to make the formwork who compete against each other; even so, his walls contain imperfections and are uneven." Crews assemble formwork in preparation for sound wall construction west of the Evergreen Point Road lid on SR 520. The sound wall separates users of the 14-foot bicycle and pedestrian path from traffic in this area. These sound walls will reach all the way out onto the east approach.

The project aims to restore access to parts of the surviving walls and open up the original gatehouse. This includes excavations being carried out in the grounds of the castle as part of work to make the castle more attractive to the public. This view of the 12C gatehouse shows new concrete work to open up the gatehouse as an entrance to the castle. The gatehouse will have floors and a roof built so it can be used for events. The overall cost of the archaeological excavation work and renovations will cost about £6 million and are expected to be complete late in 2026.

In this photo there is an almost full view of the formwork in the enormous casting basin on Oct. 16, 2013. Once assembled, this formwork will be used to construct six new concrete pontoons for the State Route 520 floating bridge.

Construction crews are underway on the fourth cycle of SR 520 bridge pontoons in Aberdeen. In this cycle, crews will build six total pontoons:

• Four longitudinal pontoons (360 ft. x 75 ft. x 29 ft.)

• Two supplemental stability pontoons (98 ft. x 60 ft. x 28 ft.)
