"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." - Winston Churchill
Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the commencement of The Battle of Britain. We should never forget the few who sacrificed so much to protect our island from invasion. They gave the best that they had under increasingly pressing circumstances - lest we forget.
Captured handheld with the EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens and 2x Mk III converter for 400mm focal length.
A nice topside pass from the Picasso Tiger of the Czech Air Force. Even if it is not my favourite Tiger paint of all time (british sarcastic understatement alert), I still like the colours.

Taking off in the late afternoon with dark storm clouds in the background, the Eurofighter powers into the sky with full afterburner, leaving behind a plume of hot exhaust.
This was a Luftwaffe event celebrating 10 years since the introduction of the Eurofighter Typhoon into the active inventory of the German Air Force at Laage AFB near Rostock

Over Lake Hāwea. An air to Air photo shoot planned with the de Havilland Dominie as the main subject, piloted by Adam and the photo ship was the de Havilland Fox Moth piloted by Lachlan, when Cam offered to add his Beech Staggerwing to the shoot a real nice bonus.
Thank you Lachlan, Adam & Cam. Thanks Brian on the loan of the 24-105mm

The Patrouille Suisse solo ships perform the mirror formation at low speed. Note the fuel-air mixture flowing out of the overpressure valve in the tail fin of the inverted aircraft. It is not a fuel leak, just the fuel system reacting to negative G loadings. Internationale Luft-und Raumfahrtausstellung (ILA) Berlin 2016.

Its Spring, so that means air shows on the way. Here's a shot of the amazing Brietling team in Portland last summer.
I had the absolute PLEASURE of heading out for a 'Formation Flight' yesterday, and whilst I was in a C172 with Jack, I got the Citabria (Champion 7GCBC Citabria) over the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney (where I worked for 13 odd years) with Matt at the controls, and with Mark on the camera in that aircraft. There will, over time, be many more pics to come!
Bottom right is Government House, top of the rudder is the Conservatorium of Music High School, whilst the top left corner sees the RBG Sydney's Nursery and the new Calyx building.
An amazing sight to behold in 2016: an original and restored Bleriot XI Monoplane, the plane that first crossed the English Channel, flying at Hahnweide. The aircraft has no ailerons, lateral control is done by wing warping. It is also equipped with a rotary engine: the crankshaft is fixed and the cylinders are bolted to the propeller and spin around. You can notice the cylinders spinning as they are blurred somewhat. There is no throttle, the engine is either ON of OFF. So to slow down and during landing, the pilot cuts the engine for small periods, but inertia keeps it spinning so it can be restarted. There is no starter, so if the engine stops, you have to make a deadstick landing.
Mikael Carlson restored, maintains and flies this airplane. To match the historical nature of the craft, he uses period tools. Hats off to this gentleman!

Happy Space Ship Saturday!
Howdy, Rich Border here, your local Really Special Agent for S.I.M.P.L.E., (Space Invaders Monitoring and Protective League Entente) back from months of laying low in order to shake the aliens and their sympathetic spies here on Earth that arm themselves with straight jackets and disguise themselves as milk men. I have captured further definitive proof that the invasion is real and here it is. These beings were discovered at an air show trying to disguise themselves as the USAF Thunderbirds but my eagle eyes and along with my sidekick Sunny the Sony sussed their scheme and, viola! I know that I'm placing my life in great danger coming forward with this and if I am abducted I ask that in lieu of flowers please send copious cash to Darling Tonia.
Yours,
Rich

In between Covid lockdowns last year I escaped to the first local airshow for a long-time 10 years to be exact. My son asked me to go which was really nice. I took him when he was young & he remembered it :)
This is a bit different for me, and I know it's a niche interest, and there are serious plane (train, car etc) buffs out there, but I can confirm these are definitely planes. And specifically flying ones, yellow ones, orange ones and red ones. You are welcome.
I still don't understand how planes can possibly fly? Or for that matter, how is it possible for a boat to float? And why is it not possible to plug a USB in right side up first try ever? Ever! Or why sloths can hold their breathe longer than dolphins. Or why you can't hum while holding your nose. So many impossibilities in this magical world of ours.
Anyway, happy Friday out there :)
PS ... any success at humming, I know you tried?

Farewell flypast of several Lockheed Hercules C-130 J, ('J' type aka Super Hercules) aircraft from 47 Squadron, Royal Air Force as they flew over Beverley in East Yorkshire on 14th June 2023. These versatile transport aircraft have been in service with the RAF for 56 years, in various different variants for different roles. Three aircraft flew in low formation at various places of significance around the UK before they are sold on to other countries. Beverley was where 47 Squadron was formed back in 1916, hence the flypast here in East Yorkshire.
