You simply can't drive along the North Otago coast without stopping to stare at the Moeraki Boulders - they're amazing!
Moeraki is now most famous for its boulders; mysteriously spherical stones scattered across a beach. Each boulder weighs several tonnes and is up to two metres high.Scientists explain the boulders as calcite concretions formed about 65 million years ago.
Zhangye Danxia Landforms, Zhangye, China.
Zhangye 's Danxia was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance.
Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls.
There are 4 viewing platforms inside the park and we visited all 4 of them. Our tour bus had to be parked outside but inside the park they provided bus to take us from platform to platform.

These colors were created by forming an emulsion of cooking oil and water drops on the shiny side of a CD, and then shining a bright light on to the mixture. I used my 60 mm macro lens focused as closely as possible. The colors can be changed by partially blocking the light, and also by using a mirror to change where the light goes. This is fun stuff to play with. This is straight photography (whatever that is), and not created on a computer, although I used Photoshop to adjust contrast, saturation and remove tiny bubbles and specks of dust. It's not possible to go to the Canadian Rockies or Baja California every day.

Tulips (Tulipa) form a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes (having bulbs as storage organs). The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly coloured, generally red, pink, yellow, or white (usually in warm colours). They often have a different coloured blotch at the base of the tepals (petals and sepals, collectively), internally. Because of a degree of variability within the populations, and a long history of cultivation, classification has been complex and controversial. The tulip is a member of the Liliaceae (lily) family, along with 14 other genera, where it is most closely related to Amana, Erythronium and Gagea in the tribe Lilieae. There are about 75 species, and these are divided among four subgenera. The name "tulip" is thought to be derived from a Persian word for turban, which it may have been thought to resemble.
Tulips originally were found in a band stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia, but since the seventeenth century have become widely naturalised and cultivated (see map). In their natural state they are adapted to steppes and mountainous areas with temperate climates. Flowering in the spring, they become dormant in the summer once the flowers and leaves die back, emerging above ground as a shoot from the underground bulb in early spring.

I just popped up to the local village churchyard, hoping to see some of these. This one is the only individual where I managed some half-decent shots.
Sminthurinus aureus has several colour forms. There is an all yellow form and some dark forms. The dark forms like this, often retain the yellow legs and antennae. This individual was 0.6mm in length. They can be quite difficult to find (I use a 5x hand-lens) until you "get your eye in". This one was under a fallen laurel leaf. Whenever I see see fallen laurel leaves, I always check underneath for springtails!
No idea why but I always have liked the look of Shrewsbury Sixth Forms rooftops, shapes, textures, colours - nice buildings too.
Sukhothai Historical Park (Thai: à¸à¸¸à¸—ยานประวัติศาสตร์สุโขทัย covers the ruins of Sukhothai, literally 'dawn of happiness', capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries, in north central Thailand. It is near the city of Sukhothai, capital of Sukhothai Province.
The city's walls form a rectangle about 2 km (1.2 mi) east-west by 1.6 km (0.99 mi) north-south. There are 193 ruins on 70 km2 (27 sq mi) of land. There is a gate in the centre of each wall. Inside are the remains of the royal palace and twenty-six temples, the largest being Wat Mahathat. The park is maintained by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand with help from UNESCO, which has declared it a World Heritage Site.

The ice on the duck pond is all frozen except along the shoreline. Still thaws during the day and refreezes at night.

Butterflies of 2023 # 26.
Many wildlife species show variation. This is the valezina form of Silver-washed Fritillary (Argynnis paphia). Records show that around 10% of female Silver-Washed Fritillaries in Dorset are the variant "valezina". Their upper wings are not orange, but a more washed-out colour. Field guides say that the underwings have a pinkish tinge. Perhaps the light has to be just right because that is something I have yet to see for myself. The underwings still retain the green wash and white streaks of the more common orange form of the insect.
