Evan and sheep sorrel.

Sheep sorrel has a tart flavor and can be used to make sauce for meats and vegetables.

It will perk up your soup recipes and can be used in place of vinegar, when making your own salad dressing or condiments.

In the last few weeks of September, Fennel is the star of our kitchen garden, with its sunshine yellow umbrellas spraying out above the swelling squash and pumpkins, taller than the crimson runner beans that are climbing high, nourishing hummingbird visitors. I love Fennel tea, and so I allow a great deal of my plants to go to seed so I can harvest the tiny aromatic seeds for my herbal tea blends.. but I love the pollen as a garnish just as much 😍 The kids made a fantastic cozy and nourishing Cauliflower and Leek soup for lunch today, we topped it with crispy wild foraged chanterelles, kefir cream, fennel pollen, parsley and borage. On the side, thick cut slices of homemade baguettes with Tarragon butter and Vancouver Island fleur de sel. I picked ramps (wild leeks) and made a bean salad. What fun to use what Mother Nature gives us!

During our hike of the preserve Evan shares clues about the most likely places to find these edible plants.

Edibles that we brought back with us.

It was a beautiful afternoon to hike at Hildacy.
